Learn to operate them and help get others in your local area setup before this entire thing sh*ts the bed... Quoting: TimeIsShort 79148274 Having a couple baofeng handheld HTs in the box with the stock rubber ducky antennas that arent programmed for repeaters or anything local and think you are prepped with comms.... not happening. Get prepped now, these things will be scarce soon and they are already targeting hams for potential conspiracy theory terrorists. Have your gear in place now! Great post OP. Everyone here needs to understand that this is not some roll-playing fantasy doom thread. Get your stuff NOW. Got a CB gathering dust somewhere? Get it out and on the air. Make sure it's in working order. FRS Radios can be helpful too. Make sure you have a way to charge batteries, or have a large cache of lithium and or alkaline batteries ready to go. If you can afford it, go buy a Uniden SDS100 handheld scanner and get all the upgrades for it (you have to pay for the ability to receive all the digital modes). Side-note on the scanner, obviously it won't let you listen to encrypted comms, but when it all goes down it'll still let you listen to plenty. Get a good shortwave receiver. Learn to use these things before things get bad. When SHTF, stay passive as much as possible (radio silence is a good thing). When you heard things on the radio keep a notepad handy and write down what you heard, the frequency and mode, and the time of day or night. Thanks again OP!!! |

I believe those folks will be heading for bunkers. |

The old flat style, with two copper wires in them. Can cut one side of the copper shorter, have one longer, to "tune" into the general listening area. Old drop wire is easy to run temporary, easy to roll up and store or take with you somewhere. |

Op I would like to know if what they say is true..... If ham users find out someone doesnt have a ham license will be ignored and outed by the other ham operators???? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79522973 You won't be ignored but you will be outed--rapidly. Licensed hams have gov-assigned (e.g. FCC in U.S.) unique call signs, and you're required to transmit call sign every ten minutes during a communication, and at the end of communication. Lack of a legit call sign and basic operating knowledge will quickly be exposed. Hams are generally nice, serious, studious people, but as a group are extremely protective of their spectrum, and extremely good at self-policing. Don't mess around on the ham bands. It won't go well. |

I have no interest in getting licensed for HAM it seems so stupid to me the way people talk over HAM. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77792937 Get a Ranger 2950 DX6 10 meter radio. You can either do the conversion to 11 meters yourself, of have the online retailer do it for you. That radio will cover the 10, 11, and 12 meter bands. No license necessary for 11 meters. The radio will put out 100 watts right out the back, without having to buy an amplifier. And you can turn it down to one watt, if you want to talk to close stations without broadcasting distance. Put up a Max 2000 base antenna. Get it up at least 20 feet at the base, but the higher the better for ground wave propagation. This setup is a great SHTF means of communications. You can talk to hams or CB'ers, and if the skip is coming in, talk to people all over the country, or even all over the world, depending on ionospheric conditions. |

You have one but you wont be ready to use it when the time comes. This is the big prepper issue with comms, lots of people dont want to get in FCC database for good reason but also wont know how to effectively use HAM radio gear or comms when SHTF, esp HF and antenna setup and propagation principles because they will have had 0 experience. Not smart move. Get at least general class license and join local ham club and learn and practice before you arent able to. Could this be done 100% on line? And, hypothetically speaking, could someone study in the U.S. whilst being in a different country? |

Short Wave will be the communication mode of survivors, but this is not a high technology issue. CB and Ham radios are in many hands, highly popular and much used, world wide. Radios can be cranked up for power, devices that can be purchased today, and used by the military in the field. No power requirements. PC use in short wave packet relay is more complicated, but home computers are prevalent, and hackers can adjust to the requirements if they have access to written instructions ahead of time, and many will! The community does not need all computer functioning, just one. It does not need major electrical support, just fast peddling on the bike gen rack for the hour. It does not need booster towers on every hill, as good hearted communities will find they are being boosted beyond their hopes, by helping hands behind the scenes. Anonymous Coward User ID: 73976610 United States 08/15/2021 01:50 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've got a pair of baofeng radios. No license to use them except on FRS and GMRS frequencies. People, print out the information you'll need to use these radios if you have them. Keep the instruction booklets with the radios and chargers. You'll need the common frequencies people will be using (FRS, GMRS) and you'll need to know to use narrow band setting. I imagine power output setting will become unimportant if society is melting down, but do use minimal output when you can to prevent interference with others or from being heard by too many undesirable people further away. And remember to be careful what you say. You done want to be telling loved ones where to meet you with your weapons and food supply, lol. Write down confidential information on paper with code words to reference this info and keep copies with each radio. Although using coded transmissions is illegal, I doubt it will matter if society has collapsed and your fleeing for your lives. |
