I believe the fire fighting going near Kabul might be happening near the Bagram Air Base. Reports are saying heavy clashes ongoing 25-30 miles from Kabul which is very close to the distance Bagram is from Kabul.

I wouldn't think any of our forces landed at Bagram as there is a airport within 3 or so miles from the Embassy.

I have many veteran friends that have varying opinions but none of them are happy with how this administration has handled this.

Many have the same view as you while just as many others seem to think we should have kept a small force there just to prevent re-emergence of exactly what we're seeing now. I can see the logic in both sides but I believe those who have fought and shed blood shouldn't be ignored.

China is reportedly prepared to recognize the Taliban as the legitimate ruler of Afghanistan if it topples the capital of Kabul — a possibility that could be days away.

Those who helped the US are probably HOSED.

Before many can even get an application in ... (via Computer? Sheesh, how long will the internet remain up and running in Kabul?), the Taliban will have taken over the city and will be looking for them so as to KILL THEM!!

Out of about 75,000 Afghans (and their direct families) who helped the US Military only 1200 have so far been approved to leave the country. The US State Dept under both Trump and now Biden have been dragging their feet at approving Visa's for those people (has been taking about 24 to 30 months to get a Visa approved).

Lesson for EVERYBODY ELSE AROUND THE WORLD ... Help the US and you WILL have the US military and government SCREW YOU OVER in the end!!

Mexicans who wouldn't do anything to help the US are WELCOMED into the US and CHEERED by the Media and Congress ... while others who PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE to help the US are effectively SENTENCED TO DEATH by the US for their help .

Police stations near Kabul have been abandoned with the guns and ammo taken by police themselves to defend their families against the taliban.

The taliban are forcing families to offer child brides to their fighters.

Afghanistan hasn't been in the spotlight for the most part in a long time until this withdrawl. I think people have short term memories and forget how ruthless savages the taliban are.

No pull everyone. Should have been done a long time ago. i was part of the unit that first took kandahar. it should have lasted a year.

the bitch is that you could see this happening, now contingency forces have to be used... how could it not be seen, i was a CPL. not a 4 star general !!! all those that helped us for 2 decades will be stuck and killed. we will see the beheadings in videos.

im pissed, and this all just pisses me off more. 5k killed there. i carried the first 7...... how many injured, poisoned by burn pits and mefloquine... how many suicides. oh 22 a day. the general public never gave a fuck. came home and the flags on every house were gone already in 8 months. they replaced the constitution with a Patriot ACT. Right now i feel like puking.

Re: Afghanistan: US Service Dogs Left In Cages At The Kabul Airport To Be Killed By Taliban
There is some accusations that the Pakistani military is moving alongside Taliban for piloting aircraft abandoned by the Afghan National Army. Some of the helicopters was actually gifted to the ANA from India and not US hardware. Some of the equipment captured by the Taliban include UAV drones. No clue if even the Pakistanis would have the capability to use it but noting China is making its presence there.

If I remember correctly Pakistan gave the destroyed helicopter used in the Bin Laden raid to China.

Also starting to see some reports of taliban fighters moving into some districts of Kabul on motorcycles and trucks. So far it seems few and far between Taliban forces inside Kabul but many reports of larger groups of Taliban nearing the city of Kabul.

Seems the only ANA fighting against Taliban that remain in the entire country is around Kabul all other major cities have been more or less handed over uncontested.

A lot of attention has been given (rightly) to the #Taliban's capture of heavy weaponry across #Afghanistan.

But amid each victory, they've gained enormous quantities of small-arms. From one base alone in #Herat, look at this -- literally 100s of M16s, M249s & M4s.

The Kabul airport is a single runway airport. All evacuations will have to be conducted using planes as there is no suitable distance flight range for helicopters.

If the Taliban wants to cause a slaughter they don't have to take entire city of Kubal but be in range for direct and indirect mortar fire onto the runway. This is exactly why so many have been sent for this operation. It is absolutely critical to the mission that the airport isn't compromised.

I believe the airport is around 5 or 6 miles from the embassy so it makes sense to get everyone to the airport even if they cant get on a plane yet. A perimeter of about 4 miles will be needed around the airport to minimize risk of indirect mortar fire. Might not sound like much but that is around 25 mile circumference.

This is an extremely challenging exit strategy. The enemy knows where you will be leaving from, when and how you'll be doing so. We have no element of surprise here. The amount of boots on the ground isn't an issue. Its the 1 runway and the challenge of needing to fly so many constant days of flights to get everyone out.

It is a brigade from the 82nd Airborne division.

There is some news about the quickly deteriorating situation the past few days but as you can imagine it's way worse than anything see on the news. Lots of beheading and executions are being conducted by taliban as they now gain control of most of Afghanistan.

I'm so angry with how this administration has handled this withdrawl of forces and so much of our military equipment is now in the hands of taliban.

That's the best analysis I've seen. It's like when the Mujaheddin acquired Chinese long range mortars and were finally put enough pressure on the Soviet troops in Bagram that it was game over.

All the Taliban have to do is disrupt the flightline, and it will be chaos.

I pray for our troops right now.

With as quickly as the Afghan army gave up other provinces there must be concerns that some made it to Kubal have been compromised.

The military is preparing for worst case scenarios and I pray we don't see anything close to what those could possibly be.

Powell followed the orders of CIC but it is widely known he expressed concerns to President Bush about having no feasible exit strategy.

US Army 11C out since 2005 so I have some basic knowledge. While everyone is making the reference to Saigon securing the perimeter needed around the airport instantly made me think of the Battle of Ia Drang.

From what I see this is much more challenging. The ability of being able to land helicopters on rooftops would be a blessing in comparison.

2nd wave of Marines arrive at Kabul airport. 3,000 expected to be there by tomorrow night.

Reports of Afghan security who are supposed to be holding off the Taliban are trying to flee the country arriving at the Kabul airport. Some officials said to have large sums of money trying to buy their way out.

Sounds like the taliban won't be the only security concern as there is obvious panic and chaos encircling.

Also been seeing some speculation that the taliban would honor pleas not to interfere with the evacuation. USAF recently did an airstrike near Kandahar said to have killed many taliban fighters.

#BREAKING: With the fall of Mazar-i-Sharif into the hands of #Taliban, they have now captured a large number of aircraft & helicopters of #Afghanistan Air Force. At-least 20 Mi-17V-5s, UH-60A+ BlackHawks, MD-530F(G) helicopters as well as Cessna 208Bs, AC-208Bs & A-29B S Tucanos!

#BREAKING: #USAF's B-52H heavy bombers have headed toward Mazar-i-Sharif. It is highly possible that they bomb the second largest air base of #Afghanistan National Air Force now in hands of #Taliban. They don't want A-29B & AC-208B attack aircraft remain in hands of Taliban

While it appears that Taliban are approaching Kabul from every direction the largest group seems to be just east of Kabul on the highway between Kabul and Jalalabad. The fighters that took over Mazar-i-Sharif will be moving south and we may see the main attacks on Kabul come from the North and East.

Kabul and Jalalabad seem to be the only major cities left not under Taliban control.

So Biden press release states the deployment of 5000 troops to Kabul instead of 3000.

It appears that the troops supposed to go to Kuwait and possibly even Qatar are being sent to Kabul instead for reinforcements.

Starting to see some early reports of fire fights starting around Kabul.
