There’s an electronic perimeter fence set up at the store. Go past that and the deviice is bricked, it sounds an alarm and it’s display shows “This device has been disabled and is being tracked. Local authorities will be alerted.” Most thirved drop them and run at that point then Apple staff just walk over and pick them up. |

Home Depot has been struggling with "organized retail crime," raiding its stores across the country and stealing millions of dollars worth of power tools. Thieves steal Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Bosche, among other power tools, and turn them around for quick cash on the street, pawnshops, or an online ad on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. Scott Glenn, Home Depot's vice president of asset protection, told Insider that introducing the new power tools that won't work if stolen is to combat "professional shoplifters" who are usually connected to a more extensive crime network. Glenn provided limited details about the mechanics of the activation switch. However, hardware hacking website Hackaday wrote: We would be really interested in getting our hands on one of these power tools to see what this kill switch looks like and how it works. Something like a Bluetooth activated relay is one option, or maybe even something that is integrated directly in the motor controller. If it were up to use, we would probably pick something that receives power wirelessly using a coil and requires a unique code. For their sake, we hope it's not something that can be deactivated with just a large magnet. Now imagine the kill switch that they might be able to install in people! All of this expensive technology to thwart thieves while all the honest customers foot the bill....sigh! Have you ever seen a blutooth chipset? You think it can fit through a needle? FFS, why did you take an otherwise good thread there?? One star just because of that one comment. You literally can't install a blutooth chipset in someone. They should make it so the tools don't work at all unless you are wearing the ID bracelet associated with that tool. There are millions of dollars worth of tools stolen from job sites and this would help kill that racket. I like it. |

You did take a good thread and inject VAXX crap into it. this VAXX crap is ruining the site. you either take it or you don't is my opinion. what anyone else does... not my problem or choice. This sounds no different than most of the security in clothes and other retail stuff. Just this allows the tool to work. There are posters who think it will be able to do anything else are insane. They already have all the tech they need in most peoples homes to full spy on them. What would a loud saw do for them ? Most theft does come from employees or paid off employees. I was a manager at HD over a decade ago. The capability of the loss dept kinda blew my mind even at that time. The tool to unlock the tool will most likely be in a head cashier or assistant managers hand. However like anything.. you will be able to remove or have an app to unlock it within months. Seems like a waste of time and money. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80574569 Better yet, stock up on hand tools - it's a sad day when your power drill has the potential of being hacked. That was my first thought as well until I remembered that power tools are now using brushless motors that require electronic speed controllers in order to function. If the kill switch is integrated into the speed controller pcb then it would not be a simple task to bypass it. You would have to have some knowledge of electronic circuits and be able to use a soldering iron. |
