What exactly do you think will happen? Doesn't seem even close to 911. Many people will get booted out for not paying rent, can't say I feel sorry for them. I was out of work due to family medical needs and had to use my 401K to pay rent, and if I ran out I had a plan to move. I don't know why people think they can live rent free.
 Quoting: Keilani

Excellent. Even when the government gives you an immoral and dishonorable choice it should not be taken.

I would do the same as you. Pay my bills until I could not and then move if I could not pay. I would never dishonor myself by screwing somebody else out of the money I owed them.

I would rather live in a tent and be debt free than to steal from somebody by staying somewhere I could not pay for.

The government said it was ok but it was not. Everybody who did not pay their rent and stayed put is a f'n criminal and a dishonorable person.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77852475

Exactly. The government is neither now honorable nor have grown a conscience for not now putting up another moratorium after doing so for 4 times in the past year already.

Moral of the story is...they pulled the plug and this is just the start. Worse is around the corner.
 Quoting: @Ohwell

I get your point OP but I don't think you get mine. We want the dominoes to start falling now. The longer we grow the problem bigger the worse it will become. We are all in for some very painful rewinds and a crazy environment. There is no avoiding that. But we can avoid making the problem bigger before again doing the right things.

We need to kick the dead beats out. If they cannot find shelter from friends and family after the government cuts them off it is their own problem from crap priorities in life.

We need to not have any lockdowns or any policies in place limiting access to businesses for any reasons. We need to do it immediately as every instance of limiting access is creating a bigger problem.

We have to go back to what we were doing in mid 2019 and do it fully without any pausing. Stalling it is not humanitarian as everything gets worse for all people the bigger they make the problems through poor and also very illegal policies.

It is not the job of Congress to fix this. The problem is that mentality. Whine about Congress needs to fix all our problems they will gladly create more problems to implement THEIR solutions.

Why did they try in the first instance?

Why are they not trying anymore?

These are the questions you should be asking.

Letting the people get evicted is the fix to the problem. The problem was only the subverting of the laws to begin with and allowing people to amass debts without penalties.

That is not the renters property. The problem is not them getting evicted. The problem is them not paying their bills.

Letting their bills get larger and screwing more people they owe is moronic.

The rest of us who do pay are all having to pay more because the f'n government idiots are breaking the laws and allowing huge portions of the populace to not honor their contracts.

I don't give a F who you are or what it is. If you sign a contract you better honor it. Not honoring your contract results in its termination and penalties. It is as simple as that. Stop letting the dishonorable people rack up more debts.

I live in Michigan where we operate on a balanced budget. California is like the renters and mortgagers who are not paying. They just rack up more and more debt and make everything worse. Then next thing you know they want everyone else to bail them out and pay more for the crimes they committed in racking up those debts. F this communist shit. Either pay your bills or get the F out of what you cannot pay for.

Things have to go through the courts which will be tremendously backed up so these people are not going to be thrown on the streets right away. It’s going to be at least a few months before those folks are actually homeless
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80146354

Not entirely true. There was a halt on evictions but not the process to get there. Many if not most evictions have already gone through the courts and have been approved. Monday morning comes, and it's on.

Here's the thing. Many people have not paid in over a year and they have had that year to make arrangements. I have even seen people just come by the apartment a few times every few months. These people could have vacated earlier but chose to screw the landlords and tie up the apartments. Now I see them coming back to gather thier final belongings and they disappear into the night.

Its like building 7. They essentially pulled the plug and let the building fall.

If they dont fix the eviction problem by Wednesday, the only logically conclusion is that this nothing compared to what is coming and much, much worse is coming.

Wednesday? I suspect lanlords will be sending out eviction notices tomorrow. They aren't going to let any grass grow under their feet on tenants who haven't paid their rent in a year or more.

and congress left for a 6 week vacation on Friday....they aren't going to be fixing anything by Friday.
 Quoting: Baloney

Exactly. But Why?

They have extended this for 4 times but not this time. Why?
 Quoting: @Ohwell

that's a good question. I don't think the timing of Congress going on hiatus for 6 weeks right after the extension failed to be renewed is a coincidence.

I can only speculate that this was the "plan" and will ultimately usher in the "Great Reset". What else could it be? I mean, you can't really expect that millions of people evicted will just willingly and quietly go out into the streets right?

For the renters who were allowed to skip rent payments for the duration of this program, are they now responsible to immediately pay up the full amount of missed rent which has accumulated during the duration of this time?

I am not affected by any of this but was curious to know if I should expect the possibility of shit hitting the fan with millions of angry renters soon in my area.

Some of those evicted tenants have been saving up their money they would have otherwise pay for rent.

They'll have a down payment for a house now, or at least they should be able to rent elsewhere. If they leave voluntary without eviction they won't even have to admit they were evicted.

Rents should go down now because there will be a lot of empty apartments. Purchase prices should go up because some of the evicted will be looking to buy, and you can again (hopefully) rent out your property without being legally stiffed for the rent.
 Quoting: oniongrass

The smarter immoral ones did exactly what you say. Saved up and chose not to pay for as long as they could. Jumped right through the loop hole they were given to maximize their own situation at the expense of whoever they were screwing.

The idiotic immoral ones bought spinner rims for their vehicles, tons of nike shoes, designer clothes, etc. We will probably see many of them complaining bitterly soon. Most of the sob stories will come from this set and most of them told by the media will be complete misinformation as it will not tell the truth in why they are broke and on the streets. They are there because they are idiots and no other reason. There are almost no innocent people at all amongst the group slated to be thrown out.

Agreed however, the situation is created ultimately by encouraging poverty.

If most of the world's wealth isn't horded by the top elite, affording to rent, eat, live is easier.

Yeah there will be those who are very irresponsible. But most of these pending evictions are those who lost income from covid lockdowns.

The problem isn't the pandemic. Pandemics are natural. Lock downs are not natural and are making the issues far worse.

Bitch I live in a camper in my sisters back yard. I pay 1,000 a month towards my mothers rent and bills. I give my sister 100 a month and do a ton of chores here.

I have chosen to live in a place that is cheap for me where a bunch of other people can also benefit from my choices. And when I get into a government created disaster it allows me to have the savings to respond like a civilized human f;n being unlike all you broke scums choosing to spend every penny you have on useless shit and make yourself dependent on others.

My mom;s rent went up 3 times since this shit started. I did two 6 months leases and it was 30 both times increase. I did a year to avoid more of that a couple months ago and then they charged me 25 more. That is 85 f'n dollars a month in 12 months and 1 day. F'n covid was also the reason I went to 6 months in the first place as I didn't know how serious it was. The rents for all of us who are honorable are going way up because dead beats are taking up so many units.

F you for wanting good people to take it up the ass for the dead beats. I would have no problem engaging a scumbag like you. I defend myself from law breaking criminal morons of the lowest order. Believe that!

the only people screwed here are private landlords

Congress should reimburse them for lost rental income. No one said they didn't have to keep paying utilities, mortgages and insurance while the renters got off free.

and you're screaming, should've been prepared better

how fucking lame

I agree 100%...some of the comments on here are totally ass nine! What is wrong with some of you people? I hope they postpone all evictions for another year, who cares...with the money the Biden admin is giving other countries...they taxed everyone of the American people to death...that money can go to pay the landlords, & every mortgage in the USA instead! Never mind they shut down our economy for a BS reason!

Re: If congress dont fix the eviction problem by Wednesday this week, prepare for the worst
the only people screwed here are private landlords

Congress should reimburse them for lost rental income. No one said they didn't have to keep paying utilities, mortgages and insurance while the renters got off free.

Agree. Makes no sense to protect those not paying their bills, right. But they did.

Easy solution would be to reimburse landlords who are the ones really suffering as you have rightly said, but they arent.

Government isnt doing Points 1 and 2 anymore.

If you ask, common sense has gone out of the window. And as stated, they have simply let the chips fall where they may.
