PCR Test is Used for Forensics
So I was watching an episode of a forensic file show. They were gathering DNA evidence and used a PCR test to determine dna they gathered.

I just found that interesting.

Then in searching, PCR test is used to gather dna/rna.

Just saying thought you'd like to know.

So if they run it enough times they can convict anyone they choose to?

Not quite, they only have so much evidence gathered. It is a test for gathering dna (which once the sample is used there is no more) not running it through multiple times looking for a virus which it detects very little viral or bacterial material.

Thanks for playing. Good day.

This explains the obvious lack of DNA harvesting ads (Ancestry, 23 and Me, etc) since the pandemic began! All the testing labs are backed up with COVID PCR DNA SAMPLES!!

Re: PCR Test is Used for Forensics
As I understand it, the PCR procedure was developed for forensic analysis. When a DNA sample gathered at the scene of a crime is too small to be useful, the PCR procedure is used to replicate multiple times so that you have a useable amount. This replication can only be done up to about 26 or 28 times or "cycles", however, for the procedure to be useful. Beyond that and you will end up "finding" whatever it is you're looking for.

Here in Ontario, the PCR test for detecting COVID uses 38 cycles, rendering it totally useless.

Well good observation.

I recall hearing one of those guys offered free DNA testing for a short while.

Take care and have a GREAT day!

Well you don't have to be snarky about it.

This is a flawed test for virus's and bacterial material, right? It is. Now even authorities are starting to admit it.

So I did find this information.

Sometimes called "molecular photocopying," the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a fast and inexpensive technique used to "amplify" - copy - small segments of DNA. Because significant amounts of a sample of DNA are necessary for molecular and genetic analyses, studies of isolated pieces of DNA are nearly impossible without PCR amplification.

Re: PCR Test is Used for Forensics
I'm a biologist and I confirm 100% what OP has stated.

We use PCR when we have a very small amount of DNA / RNA and need to make enough of it for running out on a gel to match up unknown DNA to known DNA gel patterns. Nothing about this process enables anyone to determine if a "virus" has infected a person.

Additionally, there is a high error rate (mutations of DNA) with each subsequent sequencing (copy) that is performed.

From a paper published in 2017, pre covid use of PCR...

"Consequently, errors that arise during PCR lead to false positive mutations and can obscure sequencing results, making it especially challenging to identify rare genetic variation [2]. In addition, the inherently high error rate of next-generation sequencing technologies requires additional steps to distinguish true mutation events from sequencing errors and is an active area of research [3–6]."

Study can be found at

[link to journals.plos.org (secure)]

In some cases, error rate can be as high as 56 fold from one generation of sequencing to the next. Unacceptable for anyone claiming to be a scientist to utilize PCR as a mean of detecting a specific genetic sequence beyond three of four sequences.
