i think a lot of people just live in a trance
they don't truly experience objective reality
the closest they might come to appearing to come out of a trance would be if change from conforming to one societal consensus to a different societal consensus
it's not that they independently evaluate the evidence and come to a new conclusion, they're just conforming to a newly emerging consensus
