Why would a gas purchase cause them to think they should call you for verification?

people saying there was a key logger or a device hacked if that was the case they wouldn't do a $1 test at a gas station with the card number they would have cleaned out the account

the $1 test at gas station is either a skimmer or website hack

to elaborate skimmers and website hacks dont give you card owners account details, whereas keylogging or personal device hack does.

Yeah. My neighbor is. His debit card was replaced and within days, it wouldn't work anymore. Now he has to get another card. This will be his second replacement in the last two months because he hardly ever uses his debit card after the first week of the month. And his new card was probably immediately hacked, he just didn't notice it for a couple weeks when he went to the store. He's not happy about it. Old man bitching. LOL

Cancel your debit card so it can’t be used.

Maybe the bank gave someone else the same card number.

The bank contacted ME today and asked if I tried to purchase gas at a WAWA (don't even know which one). Obviously, I did not, so I said "NO." So they cancelled the card immediately. And now I need to go in to the bank and have a new card issued.

Second time in a month of this type incident.

Why are they checking with you when debit card is used for gas but not for Chewy?

I am OP, but at work and cannot log in.

I think I figured out HOW I am getting hacked....

They'll be plenty who will have comments, but whatever....

I used my (first) card to purchase gas at a gas station close to my house. I hardly ever go there, as the place is "skanky" and owned by "Snack-Bar types," if you get my drift. Literally. THEY DON'T LIKE WOMEN, etc. Lots of clues.

Anyway, I NEVER go there, but we got gas there cause it was close to home, easy to fill up tanks, etc. during the first hurricane scare.

Then hubs said he thought he got better gas milage, cause they use Sunoco gas and he said it used to be the "gas for race car drivers," so better blend. Whatever.....again, I have no idea - I just do what he says is a good thing. So I had gotten gas there again (possibly with the NEW second card - which also got hacked yesterday).

So some time after THAT, my first card was hacked. Got it replaced, etc,. etc., life went on.

So, THEN, late last week, I went there again cause gas had risen so much all over town that it was just about the same price, so the convenience made it of no consequence (normally, they are 15-20 cents MORE than everybody else).

So, yesterday, I got the notification about my cards being hacked. What got me was that one was my BUSINESS card, which I hardly ever use. I had forgotten till the middle of the night that I had used it late last week to purchase gas because I had run my car all over town trying to run down and purchase merchandise we needed to complete a job. Since it was related to the business only that I had used my car, I rationalized that I could let the business pay for the gas. And I WENT TO THAT STATION!

Sooo, bottom line is: I think there must be a skimmer at that pump I use all the time. What gets me is: it's the ONLY pump that will take my card! Every other pump, you have to go inside to pay - which I WILL NOT DO - as they are extremely RUDE, especially to women, as I stated above.

So, later today, I WILL go to the local police station and inform them of the suspicion of a skimmer.

Whether the proprietors know about the skimmer or not, I will not speculate here.
