why shoot ? why not hold the intruder at gunpoint and call 911 ?

Reading the article it sounds like there was another man involved (Barker) and he and the mom say that the kid shot the intruder. Both adults (Mom and Barker) have been charged with the murder but the kid has not faced any charges.
Funny there is another thread on GLP right now about a 12 year old girl beating an intruder with a baseball bat and 'saving' her family. I wrote in that thread that what if it was Dad who beat the intruder then handed his daughter the bat....much easier for her to get off than another adult.
Now I just read this article and my thoughts are the same. Seems like the kids are the get-out.
