Can someone explain why? All swimmers wear caps to cover their hair to make it easier to get through the water. I don't see the difference in this one. It actually looks like it would create a drag while swimming and reduce their time.

In the article, a swimmer said that because they use oil on their hair, the rubber cap slides off. It also doesn't fit over their big hair.

My kids swam competitively and had both rubber and cloth caps. The elastic nylon cloth caps were so so much easier for them to pull over the hair and more comfortable.

That "soul cap" looks like nylon cloth. I still don't see why they can't wear them. This will now create a "race issue."
 Quoting: nutmeg

When my daughter was on a swim team years back they had to wear these team caps that were (I'm not sure) Latex or Silicone or something like that. She had long, very thick and curly hair, and had real difficulty getting the caps on and then they hurt and she would get headaches. I'm with you where it seems to be a stupid rule, and really do not see why the Olympic PTB couldn't allow 2 or 3 styles of caps for people with long and thick hair. I guess they've never been in that situation before - having either shaved their heads, had short hair, or thin/straight hair.
 Quoting: GA Girl

I have natural curly hair. When I was young, and I swam, even though my hair was mid back and very thick, I got it in the cap. You ponytail it and stuff it in. That is what my daughters who swam had to do also, as they have very thick hair like I used to have. The rules are the rules. I guess it comes down to participating in a sport, or your hairstyle.
 Quoting: tiger1

I fully underestand that. You would think a world-class swimming competitor would cut their hair short. Rules are often arbitrary. The rule was probably made long before many blacks were competing. There is really no good reason not to allow a slightly different style choice for those with that kind of hairstyle. They don't have to allow the big old hunkin' ones that look like a Dr. Suess hat, but allowing a little more wiggle room just makes sense. Otherwise it's like saying that everybody has to wear the same size swimming suit or trunks. Not every body is the same. Not every head is the same, either. It's not like the argument people are making that the runner who was DQd should be able to run with pot in her system. That's a totally different argument type, and a drug is a drug and the rule should stand. Just my 2 cents.

Don't most black women wear wigs anyways?

I'd say 90% of black women are either wearing wigs or horse tails, like that woman runner that got popped for using marijuana.

Even better question. Why would you have long hair and be an Olympic swimmer. Anyone at that level is doing anything to shave their times down, pun intended.

I would wager most of those black swimmers already have short hair, and this is just a piece of clothing to set them apart as special.

They can shave their head and wear a regular swim cap. Problem solved. If they were really serious competitors they would have done this already. Instead they promote woke BS.

In highschool guys on the swimteam used to shave their legs to get less drag. Did it make any difference?? I don't know, but if your serious, you'll do anything to shave tenths of a second off.

That seems pretty racist. Not that there are many black people who swim, but they should be able to wear the gear that works for them. It’s easy to see that normal swimming caps are for like white girls with flat, thin hair or people with hardly any hair at all.

I agree. I used to be super fit, running five miles a day and weight lifting.

When I expressed concern about whether I’d develop “masculine looking muscles”, my trainer said no way. A woman could work out constantly and not achieve that look naturally.

Dude in the pic looks like he has a lot of testosterone (check out those shoulder muscles!)

The black, supposedly female runner who got busted for pot also looks super masculine, and for that sake, even the new, black “James Bond” thing looks masculine as well. Not just the body but these angular, mannish faces. I think black women have more natural testosterone in general. Would explain the looks, sex drive and aggression.

The ban is bullshit. It shouldn't matter. But as a swimmer, you are a fucking idiot if you have a fro to begin with. Swimmers shave their legs and heads to get less resistance. Imagine a big huge anchor of afro in a cap. That has to set you back seconds at least.

Maybe they banned it because it would not be fair to anyone who used it. Instant loss dragging around a big garbage bag on your head.
