Unless you are old with a brain eating disease like Alzheimer's, or born with an IQ lower than 40, no one should have a life long conservatorship or guardian ship, even with mental illness, that tends to improve or get worse with age. People are individuals. The law needs to change to look at people as individuals first and just not a blanket one size fits all locked in policies that can be abused.

Currently, there are lots of people with high functioning intellectual disabilities that have been stripped of their rights to make choices in their own lives. The parents although well meaning are actually abusive in not allowing their disabled children to make choices for themselves. What is worse is when they die and the guardianship switches hands. People that are family or friends with the parents may or may not uphold their end of the bargain. If the state gets involved it maybe even worse with an individual that might have the potential to live on their own or in the preferred setting losing the power to have any say in the matter. They be be forced to give up treasured activities and items and pets to conform to the living arrangement someone else made up for them. Not even their right to their own medical care is considered. They can't refuse certain medical treatments or decide if they want to live or die if they have a serous medical complication. A do not resuscitate order is assigned to them for a survivable heart attack, stroke or infection.

What is even worse is when judges assign family members and friends to oversee the care of these individuals as well. And, this is common. A person can be in a facility that they are happy and comfortable, and yet the court appointed guardian will decide they can make more money placing them in one of their group homes with more severe people. Especially if the individual is high functioning, because then they are forced to care for more severe clients.
It is wrong on so many levels.

Conservatorships and guardianships need to be revisited on a regular basis to ensure the individual is being served best.

Not all people grow up mentally at the same time. A high school student that is high functioning intellectually disabled may not be ready to live on their own at 22. But at 32 or even 42 they may be up to the task.

Britney signed this conservator ship in her twenties when she was going through a personal crises. Yes, she has Bi polar disorder, but so does about 30% of the worlds population. It is only a problem if you can't manage your life. And, most the time mentally ill people can, especially if they have the funds and can afford additional supports. Therefore, there is no need to permanently withhold a person adults, basic human rights.

WHAT ARE THE ODDS THAT THE LAWYERS AND THE JUDGES WERE IN ON THIS? 10:1?

THERE'S NO WAY THAT SOMEONE NEEDS TO BE PPROTECTED FROM HERSELF WHEN SHE WAS BEING USED TO GENERATE A FORTUNE FOR A RETINUE OF EMPLOYEES AND OTHER PARASITES. THEY WERE FINE WITH HER MAINTAINING A GRUELING PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE AND WITH GOING OUT ON TOUR AND TEACHING DANCERS AND KEEPING EVERYONE ON PAYROLL, BUT SHE CAN'T GO OUT FOR A DRIVE WITH HER BOYFRINS? OR GO TO HER DOCTOR?
