The Erasure of Statues / Erase the past to control the future.

Erasing statues of our past is an attempt to erase our history, which can never be done. Shouldn't we keep statues of the past for our community to continually learn about, even if it is how not to act? Can't a statue be a symbol for how far we have moved from one time until now?

Does one person's "feelings" matter more than perhaps someone else's, either now or in the past, who would have had a different set of feelings perhaps supportive of the statue? What about people who fought on the other side of the war? If someone supported the confederacy, does that always make them wrong? How can someone be wrong if they are just supporting their father who is fighting in a war? Or brother or whoever? What if these statues were built by family members in remembrance?

How can we judge the people of the past from our own cushy "enlightened" seats of the present moment? Removing a statue is not going to make you feel better. Only you can make yourself feel better... People should ask themselves how a statue can have such control over their own feelings...

Have you ever heard the term "Weltenschauung" before? It is a term that historians use often, but it is quite difficult to translate from German. It is easy for people in today's age to judge people from the past because we have an outside perception of history, and our own judgements have changed as time has gone by. It is literally impossible for us to put ourselves in the "mindset" of the people that existed in another time period other than our own. You may think that you would think the same then as you do now, but it is not as easy as you think. Thus, how can we truly judge those in the past who had a completely different weltenschauung than we did?

Here in NC they had a court order to stop the removal of some statues. Here we go.It isn't racist. It is a part if history.
Do the research and let them serve as reminders and teaching moments.
But let not erase our past.
