Simple reason is that there's nothing there. If they allow planes to fly over there and an accident happen it will be a pain to get help there.

What do you mean restricted? People go there for tourism all the time.

Why is that organized and heavily resticted? Easy. There are all sorts of places that are restricted.

The Galapagos Islands are restricted.

Mt. Everest is restricted.

Why? Because largely the people going there are first worlder Europeans and Americans because they are pretty much the only ones with enough money to make the trip. Too many of them throw shit all over the place and act like assholes and disturb the wildlife and trample over stuff. Antarctica is a very isolated place to study all sorts of things like the unmolested wildlife.

On top of that the ocean voyage there is horrifically dangerous if not organized by competent professionals.

Would you let a group of kindergartners organize and run their own school field trip or would you neatly and orderly get them on a school bus and have a responsible adult closely monitor their behavior? It isn't any more complicated than that.

ever heard of the 3 poles challenge? you're free to go there for expeditions and you can even try living there if you can on your own. nobody is stopping you from it. there is, however, a treaty in place between all countries to live it alone from development because it doesn't have any strategic interests at the moment.
