Saw one of these out in the boonies in Idaho.

Is this one unmanned? Propane powered genset?

Yes, it has a 1,000 gallon tank on the inside of the fence for a generator. They used about 500 gallons during the power outage from the ice storm back in February.

Didnt know they are still in operation...most nav is gps based.

Used to fly and had to know morse code, which was a continuous loop recording used to identify the station.

Vortac also gave distance...the vor only dirrction although two could be ised to triangulate exact location

Cool and very cool tech for when the GPS system goes out. Which has happened pretty much never but cool still. Would be much cooler if it was a stargate you could jump in to get the hell away from here.

Yeah, the guy that met us out there said this one is to be decommissioned soon but they have to keep the tank full in case of another power outage.

He also said that he has been over seeing it for 12 years and this is the first time it has been filled during his tenure.

propane is for a barbecue grill that Martians can use when they visit to examine the facility and want to take a break and cook up some tri-tips

I see that every day on my drive to work and it is stupid with GPS. If GPS somehow goes out someday, I expect VOR will be too. I have been without both in a tiny plane solo before and what the hell did I have? Didn't have GPS because I didn't have it and didn't have VOR because I was out of range. I found an Interstate and flew low enough to recognize it and then I followed that to an airport I knew.

I never had a glass cockpit - in training that would be banned if that shitbird plane even had one. You have to learn how to unfuck yourself on the fly, 5000 feet in the sky all alone. It wasn't bad training really. Fly or die.
