I bought a guitar over the internet. What is the best way to learn out to play it?

Buy a good amp and watch youtube tutorials.

I've got a receiver hooked to the computer and a couple of big speakers on my desk, and I[m planning to hook to that. I'm sure a couple of watts will do me.

There's lots of these types of videos. I know a few people (my son included but with a ukelele) who learned from youtube tutorials.

Why not? I can afford better if there is a reason. they typically sell these cheap guitars with a small amp. I've got much better speaker available. I've got some open back speakers with 2 15's and 1 8" full range speaker. My desk speakers have 2 8" full range speakers.
All of this shit is stereo shit and not guitar shit and I know it's different.

Teach yourself how to read guitar tablature its really not to hard and try playing along to your favorite music, You can find almost any song tab on the internet

Yes they are very different and a guitar would sound like crap if you plugged it into your stereo.
I suppose you could buy a multi-effects processor and use the headphone out jack to go into your receiver, but even that still lacks qualities of a real guitar amp.

One of the best online guitar tutors I've seen is Jake Lizzio at Signals Music Studios.

He has a YT channel of that name.

Ben Eller and Steve Stine are also good, for the more metal inclined guitarist.

Make sure to use the proper fingers for the chords. If you do the easy way at the start its much harder afterward. If you learn properly youll end up being better than a lot of guitarists. Basic finger excercises are easy and will help a great deal.

Arpeggios and scales.

Your a Zep fan? Not to be cliche learn the opening to stairway. It helps develop your compositional skills which is one of the first things you'll need to begin.

Start with learning how to set it up... String height, saddles n stuff and you will enjoy it more.

Tablature is the easiest way.

Actually learning to read music and knowing notes on the board is the best way.

theory and sight reading, sheet music is faster learning to play in the long game.

It is always best to teach yourself by listening to the notes. Do not read music, it's a feeling you create.

The fastest way to cheat is to get some old rock magazines that show string and fret number for the most popular songs at the time...

Learn basic power chords.

i'd start with:

Learning how to read tabs.

then:

learn powerchords. all over neck.

next:

learn the 5 pentatonic shapes, and keep them in daily for practice.

with these 3 tools you'll be able to play anything nirvana ever played.

for led zep:take some drugs, and do the same.

learn tabs , scales, chords, everyone has their own style of playing guitar you'll well learn your own style after a few years.

Learn to tune it by ear using harmonics. Then learn rhythm, even if that means banging one string to the beat for a month. Once you have rhythm and can tune, find your favorite song and look up the basic chords and set it to repeat forever and start playing along with it.

Tune your guitar to the song by ear because none are ever exactly on key, and you need the practice. Don't try to copy anyone's style or solos note for note, but develop your own style and tone.

Do this for every song you love and adjust your tone to their "tone style" until you find your favorites tones. Then practice, practice, practice. Van Halen always had a guitar in his hands 24/7.

You ether got it or you don’t, my 11 year old son picked up a guitar and just started playing by ear. I took him for guitar lessons a year later and the guy said he couldn’t teach him anything other than the verbiage of what he is doing.
So just pick it up and start strumming!
