Cooking thread: Who else is doing more cooking at home because of the plandemic?
POLL: Do you cook more now?
Yes - I put your cooking to shame
 Yes - I microwave everything
 Yes - I cook meth
No - I order delivery every day
No - I only eat fast food
No - my wife makes me sandwiches
 Blank (View Results)

I used to order delivery almost every single day. Then the plandemic hit and prices started rising. The one nice outcome was contactless delivery, but every other order was wrong, cold, items missing and those prices... So, I stopped ordering delivery and started ordering groceries again, instead. In part to save money, but also because I can cook to restaurant quality when I care to and I never mess up my order.

I've mastered home cooked fast food. Anything from slaw dogs, quesadillas, breakfast sliders, to traditional mashed potatoes and filet mignon, to soups, stews, cookies, creme brûlée.

I had learned how to cook watching a lot of Food Network several years prior (Kitchen Nightmares, Restaurant Impossible, Iron Chef, and of course Chopped).

I tried making my own cheese once but failed because I substituted vitamin C tablets for rennet (LOL).

This week I plan to make my own creamy coleslaw, corned beef and rye bread to make wannabe Rueben sandwiches (since I quit smoking sauerkraut is just too sour for me).

I'll probably make a fresh tuna melt sometime tonight.

Anyway, who else is doing more cooking at home? What do you like to cook? Are you any good at it? If so, are you as good as, if not better than restaurant chefs?

Tell us your tips, tricks, recipes... How do you manage your perishable inventory?

Let's get cooking!

Tell us about your kitchen setup and gear...

Do you have a stand mixer? What kind of attachments?

I just ordered what's supposed to be the sharpest knife on the market (although it's not on the market anymore). How do you keep your knives sharp?

Do you replicate recipes you've eaten at restaurants?

What are your biggest cooking failures?

I cook EVERYTHING at home but not because of covid...because of the race war.

Blacks think it's the cool thing to do now to spit in whities food. No thanks! I'll eat at home.

When I was getting delivery, I thought about people spitting in my food, but I never really worried about it. God has protected me my whole life...

But, it's better to cook at home nevertheless.

What are you cooking?

Fried chicken, cornbread, grits and kale, I'm guessing..

Re: Cooking thread: Who else is doing more cooking at home because of the plandemic?
I've always been into cooking but last year I got really into making bread and since then have started making more and more things from scratch. Not sure if this will give me points or take them away but I am vegan so everything I make has been adapted to be plant based. I have traveled the country from coast and coast for the last 3 years and have come to the conclusion that I cook better food than most vegan places out there. I've also been told this year by friends and family that my vegan food is better than the non-vegan version of the dish they've had at a restaurant before.

This year I started an online food class so I've been doing lots of fermentation lately but my kombucha didn't come out as expected. I've successfully done kimchi and cashew yogurt and have been growing mung bean sprouts, broccoli sprouts, and microgreens on and off for the last few years.

Over the last year I also mastered fast/junk food including monte cristos, hash browns, french toast, gravy, tofu eggs, and meat substitutes made of homemade seitan and (store bought) tempeh. I've adapted a hamburger bun recipe into a cinnamon raisin roll recipe to make a delicious dessert recipe called 'toast' which is peanut butter, hemp seeds, banana, and homemade chocolate sauce. I make all of my own bread, tortillas, pizza crust, baked goods, and as of recently, calzones with homemade marinara, homemade cashew cheese, and homemade seitan. I also make a dank cheese sauce that tastes like cheese wiz and is perfect for mac and cheese. I make parmesan, cream cheese, and mozzarella though not cultured; I plan on learning that in a month or so.

Now that it's warmer, I eat more fruit, drink more smoothies, and have been learning to make raw food. My next projects will be ice cream, homemade tempeh, and possibly homemade tofu if I can find the proper ingredient at the store.

There may be more. It is awkward to brag but I voted and you asked.

Used to love fast-food burgers until they wrecked them by using tons of HFC, making them sickeningly sweet.

Hate the mask police so stopped eating out. Delivery fees mean food is at least double the price at a restaurant but without the atmosphere.

Mastered correctly seasoned small-sized burgers fried in a cast iron pan, small whole wheat bun, sweet pickle slices, chopped onion, ketchup, mustard. Add healthy sides to balance out the meal. Far better than any fast-food or coffee shop.

Yogurt pancakes, turkey sausage with homegrown seasonings, plus fresh fruit for breakfast.

Found delicious & easy recipes for low-fat dark chocolate pudding, yogurt banana bread, pot roast with fresh herbs & dark beer (always made delicious pot roast but dark beer is even better than red wine in it,) cream of potato-vegetable soup, Indian chicken.

Love a wide variety of cuisines. Focusing on Panda Express Chinese-American right now.

Anyone ever made gelato or low-fat ice cream?

VEGANS, What's the easiest way to make vegan burgers (NO fake stuff either. I've eaten them & they're really good if you add fresh garlic & herbs.)

Note to self: people think so highly of their cooking, so they are willing to say they put my cooking to shame, without ever describing their cooking.

I said what I'm cooking. And I think highly of my cooking because I've been cooking since age 3. I had to drag a chair over to the stove so my mom could show me how to cook scrambled eggs.

I still experiment with different foods & flavors...many of them flop...but every once in a while I have a smash hit!

Like adding almond extract to pancake batter banana2 ALOT of it!

We fish and hunt. Cook moose a bunch of different ways. Fish is versatile too. Last night was halibut nuggets batter fried in tempura batter. Rice and salad. Soon garden will provide lettuce. Food is like art, be creative!
