That's where we get into some gray area, because the argument could be made that any white person pre-1960 was racist, because white culture was dominant in the nation. Therefore, tearing down statues for the reason of racism is not only cancelling history and the benefits those people might have constributed to society, but it is also cancelling white culture. And that in itself is racist. You don't legitimately fight perceived racism with more racism from the other side. That's illogical and will have major push-back in the end, which is what we have been seeing recently, with white people getting fed up with being told they are inherently evil due to their skin color, that they should be less white, that they should not care about education, that they should hand over property/financial assets/jobs to people of color because, you know, a few white guys 300 years ago had slaves (like free blacks also didn't have slaves?).
