Buy emergency candles and lanterns. If the power goes out for an extended period of time, being the only house around with solar panels on the roof and lights on is just going to make you a target. Maybe good for the occasional outage, but not shtf scenarios most are referring to here. |

Everybody can put in an hour of so daily for cardio. As for usage, I would think about charging short range radios, CBs, flashlight batteries, medical devices, etc. Having a DVD for the neighborhood with some coffee would be a nice break from the Apocalypse. BTW, I have manual devices for backup such as my manual COFFEE grinder. |

A fren gave me a solar panel the size of a kindle and it would charge my cell all by itself! So you can be tracked...longer? In post world scenario, what is the purpose of having a phone with probably no internet and is now just a tracker? To make an emergency call to a Fren maybe! |

Buy a deep cycle battery or just use your car battery if you got nothing else. You can charge up tablets, phones or other items to get by short term. |

One thing i did notice with these as they produce so little power they will not charge a phone or tablet but they will charge a usb power stick then you can use it to charger your phone/tablet. |

With the weather up and down all the time, wind and hail can do a lot of damage to those panels. There is a special deal thru our electric company here in the SW where they have been PUSHING solar power. Lots of people have gone into debt to get these "low cost panels" put on their roofs, or in their front yards. I have no want to have solar power EXCEPT as a silent power generator. Something small that can run a fan at night in the master bedroom, and charge my phone or laptop to keep in touch with family. I do have a small portable solar charger for my handheld emergency radio system. Plus, I have several small solar chargers for on the go type charging. I have lived without running water, power or an indoor privy twice before by choice. Some people will never realize it is a lifestyle, and it is doable. Some will never even be able to think far enough in advance to even realize how easy it is to live that way. Also, quiets the mind and helps you focus better on real goals instead of constant BS. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79240999 Bingo. No sun = now power for solar. Solar panels are stupid as they are exactly that, solar dependent. Two events are currently taking place: the Solar Minimum which means the Earth is going through a cooler phase and the notion to block out the sun to prevent "global warming". I'd invest in a heavy duty old style stove, and plenty of dry covered firewood. And considering they always chemtrail and it is always windy and seldom sunny, I think wind power > solar. If possible, water power is the easiest and most efficient. All have issues. Water power has problems in winter. Manual pump well not dependent on electricity is the best source of water. |

I made one from a cut up bike and a tape drive motor.....the PM motors are available quite cheaply on ebay and electronic surplus sites....a old PM car generator works also....fun projects.... As for solar panels. the prices are way down.....even apartment dwellers can use the portable fold up panels.....they can be laid out on fire escapes or balconies.....combine with a deep cycle marine battery for a small power system..... After superstorm sandy, I used a mini system to charge devices and provide house lighting using single LEDs as the light source....I never had to run the generator over the 11 day outage....
