Problem, Reaction, Solution!
 Quoting: Don Draper from Nantucket

Problem isn't supplying people with cheap gas.
Problem is collecting tax to pay for Pet Projects and Infrastructure improvements. So the trickle down effect essentially kills our roads.

Reaction will be to print more money, increasing the US debt.

Solution will be... ultimately... OPEC will get fucked up.

So from that perspective this ATTACK on US SOIL was about what? Who would want to challenge OPEC? Who challenged them in the Suez Canal Incident, we still don't know, eh?

This whole notion of a "cyber" attack bring down the country is just hard to believe. Does gasoline travel through wires? Does gasoline come from hard drives? No. Unless people have become so stupid that they forgot how to manipulate the physical world, cyber attack isn't going to stop anything but tik tok nurses. Selfie takers might have some serious withdrawl, but it will do us good to get back to the analog (real) world again. How did we ever make it this far as a civilization without all the cybers? Think about it.

Modern diesel does not store well.
It develops algae overtime from the biodiesel components as well as retains water. You can use treatment s to deal with both so they store longer. As well dyed fuel or offroad diesel stores better as it generally is used in seasonal use machinery so must store better.
I used to buy the highest octane gasoline for the zero biofuel blend to keep gasoline. then about 4-6 ounces of stabil or even store brand stabilizer for gas.

This is dumb as hell...every year as hurricane season approaches, some moran comes in with "Auntie Intel"...

All Americans should be prepared for gasoline shortages as the refineries and pipelines mostly originate on the Gulf Coast.

The further away from the pipelines you are (Houston & New Orleans) the higher your gas will be.

More likely, the Intel was given before they made the announcement today there was a hack, and the pipeline shut down.

"The operator of the system, Colonial Pipeline, said in a statement late Friday that it had shut down its 5,500 miles of pipeline, which it says carries 45 percent of the East Coast’s fuel supplies, in an effort to contain the breach on its computer networks. Earlier Friday, there were disruptions along the pipeline, but it was unclear whether that was a direct result of the attack, or the company’s moves to proactively halt it."

So, the hack was realistically already on going, and the shut down on it's way when Uncle gave the Intel.

Highly doubt OP had anything to do with the hack, they just put it on GLP. hf

Dark Wolf! 100% accurate. I see this every day on I-10 through SoCal, frikking Peterbilt sleeper pulling 53 feet of whatever literally jumping my ass in a fast lane; at speed; three feet off my bumper and closing. It is scary as hell just to cover a ten mile commute these days.
 Quoting: tmcgyver

If you are old enough to remember when there was common sense, the left lane essentially used to be a passing lane and then the driver would move to the right after passing. In Georgia, the left lane perchtards were getting so bad that a "move over" law was passed to make the left lane perchtards move to the right when there is a faster vehicle behind them. It doesn't matter what speeds are involved, i.e. someone going the speed limit or above/below. If someone is behind you and going faster than you are, you MOVE TO THE RIGHT TO LET THEM PASS YOU!

I miss the old days when retardation and mass immigration were not so prevalent.
 Quoting: Georgia_dawg

I like to drive slower for people who are obviously trying to make me move over on the roads, Georgia_dawg. It is my way to troll them in real life. If they get angry with me I flip them off. I have seriously pissed off alot of drivers doing this over the years. Am I wrong in doing what I do? Obviously not. It is not my fault that such people are in such a hurry, especially those with a driving job.

Heck, two or three months ago one afternoon I am fairly certain I caused one such individual to beat the living crap out of whoever was unlucky enough to be in the passenger seat of his SUV. I personally witnessed him beat the crap out of whoever it was in a blind rage before beating the crap out of their steering wheel. Unfortunately this happened just off the L3/Major's Airport road/intersection. So I passed at about 50 mph. Is it my fault this happened? Obviously not.
 Quoting: darkwolf007

Why do you think it is your "job" to make others drive the same speed as you? That's narcissistic behavior. If someone drives faster than me, it doesn't piss me off. I just move over so they can easily and safely pass me. There's a safety reason why we developed a "pass on the left" system.

But in today's Idiocracy, it's not used by a significant portion of drivers. They must be too entitled to follow the traffic rules. Those are only for the people not on social media. LOL!
 Quoting: Georgia_dawg

You truly are part of that Idiocracy, Georgia_dawg. Your entire post is proof of that. People like and such as yourself are the destroyers of all that is good and better. You blame people like and such as little ol' me for your asinine behavior. I am not the least bit narcissistic, Georgia_dawg.

I will be kind to you. I will partially explain why you are part of the Idiocracy. If you were intelligent like me, Georgia_dawg, you would know you can just safely pass someone on the road. See? That is an excessively easy answer. One you could never think of without me.

Now, Georgia_dawg, please from here on out safely pass others on the roadways. Noone in their right mind wants to extract your corpse from your crumpled vehicle after you have caused a deadly accident with your unsafe driving.

Yeah I believe this is all BS. To be able to shut down a pipeline you would have to be intimately familiar with the control systems. The control system does not care about the upper echelon of data. The scada system can go down and the the control system would continue controlling.

Their are multiple control systems controlling the pipeline. You probably have Allen Bradley, Siemens, Foxboro, standalone controllers doing different assignments. You have thousands of lines of code, thousands of I/O, thousands of physical wires, hundreds of schematics showing were these wire go and what devices they go to.

I am sure there is a firewall in front of the upper echelon of data and a second firewall for the controllers. I work in a plant that has all this stuff in place and I guarantee no hacker would be able to shut it down. The only way that it could get shut down would be that there is someone internal that is very familiar with our plant to shut it down.
 Quoting: BackOnceAgain

You underestimate a high level hacker. They are usually near genius level. They can figure out ‘enough’ to make your process stop.
Especially if its a nation state hacker team with actual engineers of all sorts in the room.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69137351

No, you over estimate hackers...there is no way they would be able to get to our control systems on the plant floor unless it is an inside job. You act like you know...I have been doing controls for 30 years. Our plant floor controls have never been hacked.
 Quoting: BackOnceAgain

Of course it can. Don't be so naive. The software could have been built with a backdoor.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77754718

The recently discovered deep intrusion into U.S. companies and government networks used a manipulated version of the SolarWinds Orion network management software. The Washington borg immediately attributed the hack to Russia. Then President Trump attributed it to China. But none of those claims were backed up by facts or known evidence.

The hack was extremely complex, well managed and resourced, and likely required insider knowledge. To this IT professional it ‘felt’ neither Russian nor Chinese. It is far more likely, as Whitney Webb finds, that Israel was behind it:

The implanted code used to execute the hack was directly injected into the source code of SolarWinds Orion. Then, the modified and bugged version of the software was “compiled, signed and delivered through the existing software patch release management system,” per reports. This has led US investigators and observers to conclude that the perpetrators had direct access to SolarWinds code as they had “a high degree of familiarity with the software.” While the way the attackers gained access to Orion’s code base has yet to be determined, one possibility being pursued by investigators is that the attackers were working with employee(s) of a SolarWinds contractor or subsidiary.

Though some contractors and subsidiaries of SolarWinds are now being investigated, one that has yet to be investigated, but should be, is Samanage. Samanage, acquired by SolarWinds in 2019, not only gained automatic access to Orion just as the malicious code was first inserted, but it has deep ties to Israeli intelligence and a web of venture-capital firms associated with numerous Israeli espionage scandals that have targeted the US government.

Samanage offers what it describes as “an IT Service Desk solution.” It was acquired by SolarWinds so Samanage’s products could be added to SolarWinds’ IT Operations Management portfolio. Though US reporting and SolarWinds press releases state that Samanage is based in Cary, North Carolina, implying that it is an American company, Samanage is actually an Israeli firm. It was founded in 2007 by Doron Gordon, who previously worked for several years at MAMRAM, the Israeli military’s central computing unit. Buy New $49.99 (as of 03:25 EST - Details) …
Several months after the acquisition was announced, in November 2019, Samanage, renamed SolarWinds Service Desk, became listed as a standard feature of SolarWinds Orion software, whereas the integration of Samanage and Orion had previously been optional since the acquisition’s announcement in April of that year. This means that complete integration was likely made standard in either October or November. It has since been reported that the perpetrators of the recent hack gained access to the networks of US federal agencies and major corporations at around the same time. Samanage’s automatic integration into Orion was a major modification made to the now-compromised software during that period.

Now on the other hand. OP(mkpitbull) has likely gotten secondhand info that originated with a plant operator or a big wig. Or someone in a competent and knowledgeable position in the industry.. Going by the wording in his original post. That is the way information is relayed and trickled down, not up; in the field.

I can tell you right now Exxon employees are given “hush money” bonuses to keep shit quiet. This was too big though.
