This whole notion of a "cyber" attack bring down the country is just hard to believe. Does gasoline travel through wires? Does gasoline come from hard drives? No. Unless people have become so stupid that they forgot how to manipulate the physical world, cyber attack isn't going to stop anything but tik tok nurses. Selfie takers might have some serious withdrawl, but it will do us good to get back to the analog (real) world again. How did we ever make it this far as a civilization without all the cybers? Think about it.

This happened yesterday!

Top U.S. fuel pipeline operator Colonial Pipeline has shut its entire network after a cyberattack, the company said in a statement on Friday.

Colonial's network supplies fuel from U.S refiners on the Gulf Coast to the populous eastern and southern United States. The company transports 2.5 million barrels per day of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other refined products through 5,500 miles of pipelines.

Colonial Pipeline says it transports 45 percent of East Coast fuel supply.

------------ roughly a 50% snip ------------------------------

That is utterly crazy to know some of our nation's most precious and important infrastructure is so easily remotely hacked.

Currently formulations of gas won't store past a couple months, stocking up is nearly impossible, even with stabilizer.

Diesel you can store, propane you can store, natural gas you can store. Gas won't last a winter in a lawn mower, you can't store it very long nor can you store enough of it to make a difference if a true shortage comes.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76946058

I distinctly remember decades ago before ethanol gasoline became a thing gasoline used to be easily store-able for roughly a century. After roughly that amount of time the gasoline would start to separate into it's individual components making it useless as a fuel. The ethanol gas can not be stored for no longer than a few months because the alcohol attracts water.

Joe Biden signed an Executive Order to force ERCOT power plants to barely produce any electricity during that mild winter storm back in mid-February 2021. He mass murdered alot of Texans. I still maintain Joe Biden should be forcibly taken out of Office, tried for mass murder, and publicly executed. Seeing as he is an old frail man with severe dementia I will happily settle shoving him down the top of a tall staircase instead.

How do you think all those values, pumps, gates and other physical infrastructure are operated in a massive manufacturing plant or utility pipeline, refinery or electrical substation? It's not like 75 years ago where we posted people to do it, its all moved by electric servos and drives.

How do you think these electric servos and drives know when to fire? There are all kinds of sensors checking pressure, temperature, flow rates, testing, particle counting, Ph, on and on and on.

How do you think ALL this data is consumed and acted on? Some person sitting at a huge switch panel hitting buttons all day? Nope, Computers are active at EVERY level in the OT infrastructure. If you want a better understanding google "OT PUrdue Model"

It isn't we've become so stupid to manipulate the physical world, we have inserted technology between us and that physical world so it's run faster, with better quality in a safe way.

What's stupid is your naive thinking that this layer of technology was still analog and we can easily pivot back to it.

I don't know about that...

I've been storing gas for awhile now. Buy it when it's inexpensive (January) and then use it during the summer time. I had gas that was a year old and worked fine in my vehicles and lawn mower...

It's all hogwash, just like them telling everyone to wear their mask to prevent Covid...

Note: I do live in a drier climate that could account for the gasoline to last longer...

Refiners are actually required by state laws to change the type of gasoline they send out. Summer gas versus winter gas. Which means they have to shut down clean the entire system out and start over again. This always causes a blip in the spring and the fall. Blame your state legislatures.

I am a truck driver, freight rates are down

If there was a true overabundance of empty cabs due to not enough drivers then rates would be going up.
Rates are dropping, and yes there is less drivers, because who wants to deal with bs all day long to have dispatchers lying their butts off at you trying to get you to break the law to get the job done when you can make money elsewhere, or even sit your butt at home and collect covid benefits?
There is less overall economic activity everywhere. This translates into less freight required. And less fuel needed. Think about how much air traffic there wasn't for a full year and diesel still never dropped in price. Jet fuel is only cold treated diesel.
Diesel prices never went down, your products never became cheaper.
There are less trucks on the road right now than the same time last year, the per mile rate is less too.
If fuel prices go up, and shortages happen it is because someone wants it that way.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3949613

I have been seeing more and more truckers speeding on the highway. I have also been seeing many more 18 wheeler accidents in the Year 2021 than any other year too. One such accident happened over a week ago just on the overpass near my house on I-30. It was bad enough that it moderately damaged the asphalt itself. From what I saw from the photo my mother showed me on Facebook on her smartphone the involved 18 wheeler drivers were really lucky to even survive.

Just yesterday afternoon while driving to and from Sulphur Springs, TX I saw at least five 18 wheelers (3 going I-30E, 2 going I-30W) going at least 90 mph on the left lane the entire time I could see them. I have been seriously wondering why so many truckers somewhat recently all have been deciding that committing possible mass murder via totally unsafe driving conditions is well worth keeping their jobs.

"As if gasoline prices weren’t already high enough, a cyber attack on the Colonial Pipeline system could cause them to move even higher along the Atlantic Coast and into the Northeast.

In a media statement issued late Friday, the Colonial Pipeline Company announced that it had “...learned it [is] the victim of a cybersecurity attack. In response, we proactively took certain systems offline to contain the threat, which has temporarily halted all pipeline operations, and affected some of our IT systems. Upon learning of the issue, a leading, third-party cybersecurity firm was engaged, and they have already launched an investigation into the nature and scope of this incident, which is ongoing. We have contacted law enforcement and other federal agencies.”

As of early Saturday morning, the company said it is “... taking steps to understand and resolve this issue” but does not know how long its system will be shut in. The Colonial gasoline pipeline runs from Houston through the southern and Atlantic Coast states and makes deliveries all the way up to New York Harbor, delivering as much as 45% of the gasoline supply along its route"

If you are old enough to remember when there was common sense, the left lane essentially used to be a passing lane and then the driver would move to the right after passing. In Georgia, the left lane perchtards were getting so bad that a "move over" law was passed to make the left lane perchtards move to the right when there is a faster vehicle behind them. It doesn't matter what speeds are involved, i.e. someone going the speed limit or above/below. If someone is behind you and going faster than you are, you MOVE TO THE RIGHT TO LET THEM PASS YOU!

I miss the old days when retardation and mass immigration were not so prevalent.
