Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) may award up to $500,000 in a contract for a new diversity consultant. MNPS Board of Education is considering an addition for the school district’s Diversity Business Enterprise (DBE) Program.

The MNPS diversity consultant, if approved, would be Gwendolyn Sims. She runs the Sims Strategic Diversity Consultants, which specializes in DBEs as well as diversity programs and management for contractors and companies. She’s identified as “Gwendolyn Davis” on her website.

Nebraska Drops Permitless Carry Option After AG Opinion

The state of Nebraska is never going to have statewide permitless carry. After speaking with folks who live there, they tell me that the idea is popular in most places around the state it, but the population centers of Omaha and Lincoln are just big enough to throw a complete wrench in the works of any effort.

This year, though, there was a plan around that. A bill was introduced that would allow counties to decide for themselves if they wanted permitless carry or not.

Nashville Mayor, City Council Declare Gun Violence a Public Health Crisis

Nashville Mayor John Cooper declared gun violence a public health crisis, following a resolution from Metro Nashville City Council.

Cooper approved the resolution on Wednesday. The resolution recommended that the city execute further research on the physical and mental health impacts of un violence.

The resolution was announced earlier this month, several days after Mother’s Day. All council members except Zach Young, Kevin Rhoten, Mary Carolyn Roberts, Tanaka Vercher, Delishia Porterfield, Steve Glover were listed as sponsors on the bill.

The resolution claimed that the amount of deaths caused by gun violence signaled a health crisis. It cited President Joe Biden’s assessment of gun violence as “an epidemic.” In part, the Biden Administration promised to have the Justice Department issue a proposed rule to stop the creation of “ghost guns,” which are homemade firearms that lack serial numbers. They also promised that the Justice Department would publish model “red flag” legislation.

Legislators have pushed for other issues to be considered public health crises.

After the American Medical Association (AMA) declared in November that racism was a “public health crisis,” many state legislators attempted to model the AMA announcement within their own resolutions.

Nashville’s District Attorney Glenn Funk won’t enforce Tennessee’s new transgender bathroom signage law, posing a direct challenge to the state legislature and Governor Bill Lee. The governor signed the bill into law last week; it will go into effect on July 1. In a statement shared with The Tennessee Star, Funk asserted that the law represents hate.

GUNS SAVE LIFE WINS! Cook County Gun & Ammo Tax Unanimously Ruled Unconstitutional by Illinois Supreme Court

The Illinois Supreme Court has struck down Cook County’s gun and ammo tax as unconstitutional in a decision released yesterday. In Guns Save Life v. Ali, the state’s high court ruled the tax on an unpopular fundamental right improperly violates the Illinois Constitution’s uniformity clause.

The Cook County Board implemented $25 per gun tax on firearm purchases in 2013 to make legal gun owners help pay for gun crimes committed by gang members and other violent criminals, primarily in Chicago. Later, the Cook County Board galaxy brains implemented yet another tax on a fundamental right they don’t like with in a 5 cents per round ammo tax (a penny per round for rimfire ammo).
