Or more likely, not realizing it's in a "controlled setting", the mare did not want the stallion to kills its foal.

Normally, a stallion will kill the foal to a mare it wants to mate with to ensure his genes gets passed on and not some other stallions. Of course, this can't or won't happen in these controlled settings but the handlers snoozed and let the foal nearby which just made the mare anxious when they put her in the pen.

The mare obviously had shoes on as you can hear a slight metallic ring from the mares well placed kick to the stallions forehead which was damn near akin to the captive bolt guns they use in slaughterhouses.

Horses can kill by biting. There's a story from back during the Napoleonic years of a horse being skewered by a Russian with his bayonet. The horse bit his face and ripped it right off. True story.

Horses are not zebras. Feral stallions rarely kill foals after they take over a band. They will impregnate most of the females in spring anyways so it doesn't make much sense to piss off the mares. Zebras breed all year round in a tropical environment. Horse breeding is strictly limited to late spring.
