Re: So I talked to a muffler shop owner yesterday while my car was on the lift
The logic behind an hourly rate is absurd:

A lazy unskilled dildo will end up making you more than a professional if you charge by the hour...
 Quoting: BRIEF

Flat rate is still considered hourly, just not chronological. If a job pays 4 hours. You get 4 hours. If your good and get it done in 2 you will make money. If you suck and it takes you 6 hours youll be looking for work soon. If a technician applies with me and is afraid to work flat rate I wont even consider him because I know hes a dud.

I own an auto shop with 20+ employees and we were closed from March 28 - the first week of June last year.

When we did come back half the employees stayed out citing fear of Covid...Meanwhile they're home collecting more money in unemployment than they made in salary..Now we are packed to the rafters w/ no one here to work.

-This is COMMUNISM people better wake the fuck up and organize its time.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 39164599

Working for shops is too much. You demand too much of their time and there is NO EXCEPTIONS. 20 min late your fired. Well fuck you Il go work for myself. Fuck auto shop bosses never met one who was not a greedy big mouth mean asshole. .
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80010654

Bet you cant fix shit in a reasonable time. Probably never beat flat rate time. I treat my guys who are good like kings. Literally. Gave one guy a 4 wheeler as a bonus last xmas.
Gave 3 other guys 2k$ each bonus.....alot of other guys got 50$ gift cards to the grocery.

Re: So I talked to a muffler shop owner yesterday while my car was on the lift
I once was a service writer for the local muffler shop in town (I’ve done just about everything)
My kid started as a auto tech at 17 at the dealership in town, he’s 21 now, he’s got more money than me...
 Quoting: Golfcart 77110102

Here's the kick. If you are the best, you can fix a car in ten minutes, but why should you only charge ten minutes labor? No, the skill and talent that allows me to diagnose and fix a car in just a few minutes, where the other guys are scratching their head trying to figure it out, allows me to charge MORE...
 Quoting: BRIEF

I spent 12 years practicing the skill and buying the tools to enable me to do the job in ten minutes.....your paying for the years not the minutes.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 67904014

When I was doing this kind of work I would tell the customer what was actually wrong and give him a price for labor. For instance replacing a throttle position sensor or O2 sensor would take me five minutes, but I would charge 100 dollars. Just to move the car around is a pain in the ass, and deal with the customers.
I told them what was wrong from the get go and that was FREE. They could always try to do it themselves but most are afraid to.

If he didn't like the quote he could always go somewhere else.

It's not just the work you are paying for , its the knowledge you dont have yourself.

So you think he's gonna hire you with no experience?

go on ask him what the requirements are to start working

what's the name of this shop and where's it located?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79094956

I think he would hire anyone who would consistently show up, be willing to learn, I check those boxes all day long.
 Quoting: CharlieFoxtrot

lmao

you are delusional

first off you have 0 experience

its going to take time for you to learn

the audacity of you to think you can just waltz in and start doing that kind of work

You said you do IT, well i can just show up to work consistently and be willing to learn, so where's the IT firm that's going to hire me with no experience?

holy crap the ego on you

but i would be entertained to watch you actually tell him you would like the job

I would love to watch your face as he explains how he needs someone who can start work right away , not someone that will spend weeks to months learning, and then years perfecting the art

holy shit
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79094956

"first off you have 0 experience"
WTF do you know about me? other than I work in IT now.
 Quoting: CharlieFoxtrot

It is just some idiot who thinks auto mechanics are special

Most i ever seen are half ass and liars to boot

My mother been going to same one for years wbo owns a shop and teaches at university

They charged her so much money to repair a problem they never repaired

I took a few minutes to figure it out.

The rubber intake boot was cracked and some idiot put electrical tape around it

I bought a new rubber boot for 50$ a fixed problem with engine rpm

Idiots

yeahsure my car was leaking exhaust from the engine compartment. I had a mechanic check it out and he said an exhaust manifold had a crack in it. The cost to fix it could easily be $1000 or more.

I decided i would learn how to do it myself. I spent 100s of hours watching how-to videos. When i was ready, i open the hood to inspect the manifold and what i found shocked me!

The manifold was missing nuts on two of the studs. I replaced the nuts and the leak was sealed.

I suppose the mechanic who replaced my engine a couple of years earilier did not tighten them properly.

The mechanic who checked it out was incompetent or a liar - maybe both.

So you are damned right! Nobody repects a fcuking mechanic! They are low IQ liars and thieves!

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79094956

A good mechanic has a valuable skill that no machine or computer can replace. A computer can plug into a car and show the mechanic how things are functioning but it still takes an experienced human mind to unravel the information.

And for those of you who insist mechanics are dumb monkeys, these days they have to basically be electronic engineers and computer IT techs just to diagnose all of the complex electrical systems of a modern car.

When my house was built they installed wiring for an alarm system and left the tails loose in each room. I got a quote from the sparks who did the installation for competing the system. 1,000 euro. I bought the necessary hardware from a box store for 60 euro and fitted it myself, took a weekend. I'm in the wrong job..

They arent labeled. You need to know what its supposed to look like for the car your working on to see what is wrong.

THEN, you actually work yourself. You are there in the shop ramrodding anyone you hire and doing the hardest and most profitable jobs YOURSELF, and you pay employees based on their ability TO MAKE YOU MONEY

Mkay?.

You dont have to be a certified public accountant to run a business either, you just need to know some old alcoholic who hates the government and is good with numbers

Re: So I talked to a muffler shop owner yesterday while my car was on the lift
nobody wants to work
he has work backed up
the employees I saw were over 50 years old

I am contemplating quitting my IT job and going to work in a muffler shop, at least my work will have some meaning.

Re: So I talked to a muffler shop owner yesterday while my car was on the lift

...

yeahsure my car was leaking exhaust from the engine compartment.

You spent hundreds of hours learning how to tighten two nuts and you call mechanics low IQ cretins?

If you were REALLY smarter than they were you wouldn't have had a whole engine replaced because it had a bad MAF sensor

cruise

Yes, there are dishonest mechanics, and they see a Mc Mansion type cubical class retard coming from a mile away in his fancy fucking crossover SUV.

Most of them would never rip off a fellow working man, but there are exceptions to every rule.

yeahsure you must be a mechanic. You have no reading compehension skill.

Uh huh.

I am a mechanic among many other things. I can basically do anything, including your job, better than you can.

I'm not the one who had an engine replaced and got ripped off by the guy that did it. YOU ARE. And I understood every word you wrote.

I wonder if you did.
