nobody wants to work
he has work backed up
the employees I saw were over 50 years old

I am contemplating quitting my IT job and going to work in a muffler shop, at least my work will have some meaning.

Re: So I talked to a muffler shop owner yesterday while my car was on the lift
I was eating breakfast at Carl’s Jr. the other morning and overheard a manager on the phone firing a kid who called in. Twenty minutes later, said kid came in the store to get his things. I was walking out by then and he was in such a mood that I stepped aside to let him out the door first. He slammed the door open with such force that it came slamming back toward me. He reached to stop it from hitting me and apologized but then once outside he had to tell me why he was so angry. He said he got fired for calling in one time and that his friend was dying and he needed to be with his friend. He then explained that he was only working there “to help them out” (meaning Carl’s Jr.) I just said, oh well, lots of places are hiring, you can probably find another job. But really I was thinking, what kind of attitude is that? They just don’t want to work.
 Quoting: Sonflower17

He is correct, he could work anywhere. It is a service job. He is doing them the favor. I understand how manager feel they can't run a business like this with inconsistent help too.

However most young people are atheist now a days. They are NOT putting off a reward for an after life they don't believe in. All you have is your time now. Being a good person only matters to those that know you. There is no god to impress. They serve no one, but themselves first and formost. They already saw how their parents have been treated over the past 20 years. Gen X is the most screwed over generation ever.

So personal relationships have become more important than work to this younger generation. Everyone grew up with working parents that never got anywhere in life and feelings of a lot of neglect and stress. Great relationships cannot be replaced by a cold work place.

This generation didn't not benefit even financially from their parents working all the time. So at the end of the day you wonder what is your worth and you are doing, with your life that is most valuable to you? You eat, sleep, work, or otherwise wash, rinse, repeat. There is nothing left for you to work hard to invest in or for. No one is going to give crap about you without wealth or a few close loyal friends/ family.

The system has the job market and your expenses micro managed so you never get ahead anyways. It feels like slavery. So why put up with the inhumanity and humiliation of being a cog in the wheel to make someone else rich or help them get a promotion, or make there day easier. They are not doing you any favors.

So yah, I get it. Jobs, under $15.00 are everywhere and your job is nothing but a means to an end. tomato

For example, I could have a guy drill broken bolts on a head for a job total of $1,000 vs everyone else who told him they would have to pull the engine out and remove the head to drill it...We drilled on the vehicle and save people a ton and made a ton = win/win

A gynecologist who had lost interest in his medical practice decided to change careers and enrolled in auto mechanic school.
He performed well in the course but was still shocked when he got an off-the-chart 200 on his final exam. He asked the instructor to explain the grade.
"I gave you 50 points for taking the engine apart correctly," the teacher said, "50 points for putting it back together correctly -- and an extra 100 points for doing it all through the muffler."

I took my Toyota 4x4 pickup to a muffler shop one time, this old school muffler guy put a header on the 4 cylinder engine and then split two of the pipes off to the right side, and two of the pipes off to the left side...he made a dual exhaust with two mufflers and to pipes tipping out behind the rear tires

It's an extremely tiring and grueling job as well. One you are on the assembly line there is no stopping it. They want you at that shop YOUR ENTIRE WAKING LIFE. It's not worth the commitment. Long time pro mechanic here. I do video production now. If it was like 3 days a week I would do it but no they insist you be there every waking second.

A lot of jobs are like this... too demanding of your time. The pay does not compensate for what the bosses want. They just want to squeeze your life out of you.

Exhaust work is an art form. Sure you will have the gravy jobs (just replacing the muffler or cats which become routine and tedious) but most of those are modular now and are bolt-in, making things much easier for the most part. Custom exhaust jobs will be the relief valve. Learn about scavenging. It is fulfilling work and welding skills will always be needed. H-pipes, x-pipes, resonators, muffler placement in relation to desired tone and/or volume... yeah.

Edit: forgot about turbo plumbing.

If you're going to buy something...BUY IT NOW.

With supply chain shortages escalating every week, car and car parts pricing escalating every week, and the hyper-inflation coming this way, if you wait 6 months+, you'll be paying 25%-50% more than if you buy it now.

I just picked up 4 new Pirelli AS tires for my SUV even though I still got 10K left on my tires, because China bought up a lot of the rubber farms and are now putting the squeeze on tire production.

Supply and Demand is going to get really rough in the coming year.

I escaped NYC some time ago but there was lots of crazy shit going down in muff shops... selling everything from hookers, to stamp collections, baseball cards, cigarettes, refrigerators, garages filled with boat motors, butt plugs, TV dinners, even accepted peoples' food stamps in exchange for commodities.

I guess in September Xiden is either going to again renew unemployment benefits or let the millions go get back to work... the former seems like the obvious bet in effort to further destroy America, but who the hell knows what is going on anymore.

It would not be a bad time to learn to master muff in a shop, lay pipe, or any other sort of steady mechanical work in the age of rising retardation and general nigardly work ethic.

Nobody respects mechanics. Everyone wants it done now for free. Fuk working on cars and I am an expert with all the tools. No way everyone is a pain in the ass in those shops esp the bosses. ASSHOLES.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72553316

yeahsure my car was leaking exhaust from the engine compartment. I had a mechanic check it out and he said an exhaust manifold had a crack in it. The cost to fix it could easily be $1000 or more.

I decided i would learn how to do it myself. I spent 100s of hours watching how-to videos. When i was ready, i open the hood to inspect the manifold and what i found shocked me!

The manifold was missing nuts on two of the studs. I replaced the nuts and the leak was sealed.

I suppose the mechanic who replaced my engine a couple of years earilier did not tighten them properly.

The mechanic who checked it out was incompetent or a liar - maybe both.

So you are damned right! Nobody repects a fcuking mechanic! They are low IQ liars and thieves!
