nobody wants to work
he has work backed up
the employees I saw were over 50 years old

I am contemplating quitting my IT job and going to work in a muffler shop, at least my work will have some meaning.

So you think he's gonna hire you with no experience?

go on ask him what the requirements are to start working

what's the name of this shop and where's it located?

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd hire someone to work on cars that was bringing me their car to be worked on.

I think most people have developed social anxiety. It makes it hard to leave your home or do much of anything but get what you need and come home. People just feel like they are not perfect enough for the world. Perhaps even feel dismissed, ignored, and slighted by others, when working in person. Even families are not very supportive on one another anymore. You income just goes to paying bills. Eve when you get ahead, you get behind because something is going to break.

Most people do not want to work customer service jobs. That is probably the number one job that is offered in the USA. Service workers are treated poorly and their is no respect. Entitled, frustrated people are everywhere too. You don't even want to be caught dead doing that sort of job either. The wages are low too. Most jobs will demand a lot as if you live for your job. There is little work/ life balance, no feelings of accomplishment at the end of the day.

No loyalty either. Employers stopped being loyal to their employee's and thus employees are not longer loyal to their employers. Even if you are a class act and try to give your boss two week notice when switching jobs, you can expect to be let go right their on the spot. And, of coarse sometime people just quite without warning either, or just stop showing up. Which is the ultimate screw you to their work places.

Exhaust work is an art form. Sure you will have the gravy jobs (just replacing the muffler or cats which become routine and tedious) but most of those are modular now and are bolt-in, making things much easier for the most part. Custom exhaust jobs will be the relief valve. Learn about scavenging. It is fulfilling work and welding skills will always be needed. H-pipes, x-pipes, resonators, muffler placement in relation to desired tone and/or volume... yeah.

Edit: forgot about turbo plumbing.

Yes, it's absolutely an art...I custom bent all of my pipes...

personally i've never looked down on anyone who's an automechanic, or construction worker or electrician, or plumber or, etc etc

It's never occurred to me exactly WHY anyone would.

because it's real work? its actually hard work?

i'll tell you where this reverse work ethic is coming from.

it's coming from the race of WALL STREET PARASITES who truly believe working people are suckers, idiots, losers

because THEY truly do NOT do any productive work and make 100 times more money than people who do work

There is an amazing amount of jobs in the surrounding area of Joplin MO. I saw a list yesterday that boggled my mind. Not just wait-staff but good paying jobs. Employers are upping the ante in wages.

It seems that human nature is once again in play!

There seems to be a prevailing surrender to reduce ambition, expectation, and perseverance to surviving on an
unearned income that arrives in the the bank without fail.

We've been fostering this surrender for decades, to the point that it is an acceptable choice of paths.

Employers don't want to hire anyone over 50 either anymore. My spouse and I have both tried to get professional type jobs in our field for years.

Younger people at work do everything they can to drive you out of the work force. They are not helpful, rude, politically motivated bigots, talk sh*t behind you back at work/ make fun of you, and even set you up to fail. They can be very nasty.

All the employers want 20 and 30 something's. Even look at the FBI recruitment page. They all want early college grad. It you are over 50 you are just thrown away. Might as well start you own side business.

Re: So I talked to a muffler shop owner yesterday while my car was on the lift
I was eating breakfast at Carl’s Jr. the other morning and overheard a manager on the phone firing a kid who called in. Twenty minutes later, said kid came in the store to get his things. I was walking out by then and he was in such a mood that I stepped aside to let him out the door first. He slammed the door open with such force that it came slamming back toward me. He reached to stop it from hitting me and apologized but then once outside he had to tell me why he was so angry. He said he got fired for calling in one time and that his friend was dying and he needed to be with his friend. He then explained that he was only working there “to help them out” (meaning Carl’s Jr.) I just said, oh well, lots of places are hiring, you can probably find another job. But really I was thinking, what kind of attitude is that? They just don’t want to work.

It really is (especially if you don't have the right tools). I changed my discs and brake pads a couple weeks ago and felt it the next day. Having a lift would have made it much easier but still. Same goes with construction. I have the "luxury" of being a keyboard monkey most days of the week.

If you are older too it is hard to get loans or grants to help you pay for retaining for a new career either. If you hold a degree it is is even worse. You get no help at all.

Which is stupid, because most employers if your degree is over ten years your knowledge is considered dated. This is especially true if your degree and your job/career do not match up. you could have gone to college to be one thing, did that one thing for a while but eventually end up in something else related, but now does to work out for you. If you hold a degree there are no safety nets for retraining.

It is worse because if you have not been in that field in which your degree was earned, than you might as well not have had a degree in the first place. Your knowledge is considered dated and you might as well have been a HS graduate.

I took my Toyota 4x4 pickup to a muffler shop one time, this old school muffler guy put a header on the 4 cylinder engine and then split two of the pipes off to the right side, and two of the pipes off to the left side...he made a dual exhaust with two mufflers and to pipes tipping out behind the rear tires
