I bet he feels good about having those safety glasses on when it happened. Now he'll be completely fine in a few weeks, but he would have been blind on one eye if he hadn't had those glasses on.

They claim it was a ~50% overpressure round.

I would also blame the gun design. Relying on 4 threads to hold the breech block in place on a 50 BMG is insane.

Seems like a good guy and I am very happy he did not die.

yeah coulda been another thread or 2 on the cap but no reason for the 2 tabs on the folding stock to be half the height of the cap and less than an inch long

As a machinist who prototypes and designs I would not trust that rifle at all. No gas vents or other secondary safety features other than those two weak tabs behind the pipe cap.

The type of round, SLAP, sabot light armor piercing, has a sabot containing the bullet, when it is fired the sabots grip the barrel instead of the bullet, and as it exits the barrel the sabots fall away.

However, SLAP rounds are designed to be fired without muzzel breaks fitted to the weapon, M2 for example, so instead being effectively discharged from the end, the sabot gets trapped inside the muzzle break whereby the vaporised plastic build up inhibits the bore end eventually stopping the bullet causing massive overpressure.

The video was painful to watch.

Crazy how short the engaged thread length is. My CVA muzzleloader breech plug has probably 4-5 times the engaged thread length for nowhere near as much pressure.
