"My thought on the matter is that he said return trips are done with RT Device and tied to a particular time window, hence most likely the period checking of his phone, as for the wormhole finding with a laser, one would imagine if a return trip to your own parallel would involve taking the same way you came, hence the need to open the same hole and the need for the laser, which if im being honest with myself appears to me as he is finding the direction of the hole.
