He's probably referring to the bell curve, which is a Gaussian distribution.

Lots of things in nature can be modeled fairly accurately with a Gaussian distribution, but in way too many cases they force things into Gaussian because it makes the math significantly easier.

This puts Peterson's claims in perspective. He is claiming that 90% of the population has an IQ higher than 83. This also means (assuming a symmetric distribution) that only about 10% of the population has an IQ over 118 as well...

There are long-standing sources which claim that among certain sub-sections (demographically/racially) that the percentage below 83 would be significantly higher... One could easily tie these assumptions to the failure of public education (and most public services) in most major (Democrat ruled) cities. Sadly, if accurate (and almost 100 years of research seems to indicate it is so) there are no easy solutions to these problems...

I would guess 40%.

humanity as a whole is getting dumber. the people who work at NASA now aren't half as smart as those decades ago who sent people to the moon. we're collectively relying on technology to compensate for a drop in natural intelligence.

One radio show I listened to years ago, had stated about 50% of high schoolers failed to achieve the minimum score on Maths and English to be able to be considered for a trade apprenticeship.

At this rate (with the continued dumbing down) I would say we are in an implosion of society.

Hopefully, a core will be able to rise out of the ashes - at some point.

At any given point in time there's probably at least 1/4 of the population who is unable to care for themselves adequately. Drug users, alcoholics, severe mental illness, physical disability, the elderly... Then you add the intellectually impaired like this, and it's a bad deal for the rest of us.

It used to be that families took care of their members who were incapable of taking care of themselves. Not any more. Everybody is on his/her own.

The average for black americans is barely above that cutoff.

I am of the unpopular opinion that IQ is innate. No amount of education can radically increase it. Sure a couple of ponts , maybe even 25 max but increased vocabulary, social circles and degrees do not equate to IQ. To me, I view it as a mutation of sorts and I also disagree with the view that it is genetic or inherited.
In fact I view it as a curse of sorts , Well at least according to high IQ people I have encountered.

Indeed, being highly gifted is at times a curse. Increased depression is a fact.

The difference between me and an average person, is the difference between an average person and those that are mentally retarded.

However, there is some hereditary to intelligence, although none from my family line are close.

Hereticism is also somewhat inherited.
