They said they were charging him with 2nd degree murder, not manslaughter. 2nd degree just means it was not premeditated, but it's still murder.

We used to call 2nd degree murder a "crime of passion," like if a guy walked in on another man sleeping with his wife and went into a rage and killed the other man. He wasn't plotting to kill him, but in the heat of the moment, he did, so he would be charged with 2nd degree murder.

2nd degree murder is not manslaughter because you killed the person on purpose, but you just didn't plan it. Planning it before you did it would be 1st degree murder.
