Most parents can’t or won’t sit with their kids all morning to make sure they do their work. You are rare. So kids go unsupervised. Most need someone watching them every moment and making sure they do their work. There is just too much distraction for them at home. And little motivation because they are kids.

It is so difficult to fail classes now. Teachers let the kids make corrections on failed tests and quizzes. I dont get it

Just plain lazy and shame on the parents for not monitoring their children's progress. Quite embarrassing

How many parents are home with these kids or are the parents out working?

How many kids are in the home even if a parent is home. The mother might be taking care of an infant and a three year old, along with cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc.

Amazing how people like you are blaming the kids or blaming the parents. I blame the governors or mayors who closed schools. I blame the teachers who refused to go to school if they did open.

Oh....by the way, I did motivate my kids. Their father didn't. He was absent most of the time....career officer in the military. I said, both children are very successful....because of the way I brought them up. The older one became a millionaire at the age of 30, multi-millionaire at 32 or 33.....but she didn't become motivated until her 20's.

What percentage of the 40% are students of color?

Does anyone think those kids will be that much better off if we give them "emergency" classes to catch them up? It will be more money spent with little return. And the next year is coming up behind. What classrooms will they sit in?

True but when you have 40% of the class of seniors who will not graduate that goes more to the teachers and school leaders as opposed to those they are supposedly teaching.

With the internet and all the resources online for education, you have be be very foolish to not be able to pass these sorts of things.

The net is full of stuff for all students, on all subjects.

The net has given kids these days absurd levels of potential to learning there school subjects, and alot of online teachers, will be far better then ones in your classroom.

I dob't know about dallas, but in many parts of the country, LGBTQP+ classes are required to graduate. They even assign kids to practice it as homework! Graduating from these schools is not a good thing.

I worked full time pursuing my masters at night

But I found the time, cuz kids are the only priority for a parent

It is good your husband supported you so you could stay at home. And he didn’t interfere. You couldn’t have done it without him. You had a good guy. And success isn’t about how much money they make. It is how they will be remembered when they die. That is true success.

They’ll just scale their marks and pass most of them. That’s how they dumb it all down. I’ve got a whole career of experience in this area. Snowflakism is now mainstream. God only knows where this will be in another 12 years.

True. They just can’t have kids stay at home and expect everything to go well. And then blame the kids and the parents for failure. Parents weren’t set up to deal with this. Neither were the kids. They depended on the schools they pay taxes to.

Those kids are fucking idiots.

My daughter is in an online Texas high school.

She has three weeks left and can’t finish any of her classes because the teachers are not unlocking her last classes/ assignments because they say that so many students are so far behind that it is not fair that some students are almost done - and in her case, could have been done weeks ago.

Or, the teachers unlocked the classes and assignments, but they won’t grade the assignments/tests for the same reason - “it’s not fair” to the students who are behind.

They are not giving us access to the class statistics - but last year - 80% of the other students were failing.

I have raised hell about it and they don’t care... Not sure what to do next year... there are several other online schools - she had a different one last year - but I think they all suck.

Sadly, if you are speaking of city public schools, probably 60% shouldn't graduate even without the impact of covid. Many seniors are functionally illiterate for all intents and most purposes.

ha.you think those homes in s dallas pay any significant amount in property taxes? thats hilarious. they are 75 to 80 percent subsidized by the wealthy school districts in the state. Some houses will have 4 kids attending school at 1ok per kid cost to the state while they might pay 1k per year in totality of taxes.

That's if you're a self-powered learner. If you're that, the public education has achieved its maximum goal (although it's probably mostly inborn and rather than learning that in school, kids like that just do well in school -- but I know a very bright exception, a brilliant girl who gave up and said "school is not for learning".) That's a stretch even for many college graduates.

But there's a reason we used to have vocational ed. and we should again. Most of these kids aren't going to be brain surgeons, and if they're going to be car surgeons, they could start learning auto mechanics during high school.

They should graduate. Otherwise the taxpayers are stuck with trying to fix them for several more years until age 21 or 22 in most states, but it won't make much difference and prevents them moving on with their lives and seeking full time work at the skill level they have.

They really are attacking the country from all angles, it's the plan. Loot what is still left then bring it all crashing down.
