Same - I am a little older than HD Harry, but pretty much the same experiences.
Although I could see in the 80's and 90's that society was falling apart fast and already I stopped following the "norm".

But sure as anything I'd take the 80's or 90's over the shit show we have going on today. It really is incredible how many people have lost their minds - or never had one to begin with.
The brainwashing is so complete and pervasive I think GLP people are perhaps 3% of the population.

When I was 11 years old my Dad bought a boat and anchored it in Lake Erie. That summer my brother and I lived on the boat the whole summer, 90% of the time by ourselves.
No cell phones, no nothing. It was great. There was a CB radio on the boat and an AM/FM radio. My Dad said that the only thing we had to do was keep the boat clean, wash the outside every day and polish the chrome once a week. Other than that it was fishing and swimming and snorkeling every day.

What a summer.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72530568

I used to camp in the Adirondacks each summer. It was a church camp but it was still tons of fun. I remember going under water and finding clams. I learned how to sail and canoe.

I have a new neighbor now that likes to kayak. We get along great. But he only feels comfortable kayaking with his girlfriend and sometimes her dad. He never leaves his apartment unless with her. It was the same story with all the other guys that lived here. I got along with all of them but they were tethered to their girlfriends.

People are afraid to socialize. It drives me crazy.
 Quoting: Hot Dog Harry

Yeah - here in Canuckistan the media has people so freaked out about CV19 that shaking hands, hugging and talking to someone less than 6' away has become taboo.
They have made everyone afraid of everyone else.
Great way to start a civil war.
Vaxed vs Unvaxed
Black vs White
Left vs Right.
They are dividing the peoples like never before.
Yeah - I miss the old days.
Cheers Harry.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72530568

Best times I ever had were in Quebec on tour with my cheesy cover band in the early 90's. Nobody had a phone, just drinking and socializing and traveling around with my crazy band mates. Going to the beach, the mall, the arcade... It would make me sad to go back now.

Television, the drug industry, and smartphones/tablets are who I blame the most for our decline.

They want a doped up, television addicted, smartphone carrying zombie culture and they got it. I even see older people acting like the younger ones now. Watching nonstop TV while also using their smart devices. My parents never turn their living room television off. It's on 24/7 with the kitchen one going most of the day too. My stepmom has an iphone and tablet and she scrolls through it all day.

I remember riding a bike with her about 8 years ago. Going shooting with my father. Not anymore.

It's non-stop screens.

I'm so very happy I retired before the scam-demic hit...I feel very lucky as well!

I just went next door to where they are building a house, and the contractor recognized me and complemented my work over the years...He used to bring me his fleet for repairs...He said everyone compliments my work and mentions my name around town...it's nice to be recognized and it's far from the first time, though it has been awhile lol

The highlights of my day today:

I had an interesting dream right before I woke up.

I have a leftover cheeseburger for lunch.

There might be some thunderstorms today. That could be fun.

I don't expect any interesting conversations... I'll go home and maybe clean the kitchen.

Yay. The New Normal.

Man it was fun though. People were people then. Creative and outgoing.

Lived through the best decade America ever had,
the 1950s. Wish I had been older instead of a
kid. Would have enjoyed it much more I suspect.

From the 60s until today, have watched America fall
apart piece by piece until now it is a communist
freak show that our founders wouldn't even
recognize.

No nation in history has fallen SO FAR, SO FAST.
I guess it's merciful that the youngsters don't
know how great America was, or what a shithole it
has become, and from the looks of it, they will
carry on the destruction.

They will certainly live to see the END of the USA.
I hope I don't.

I said there are older people than me that have become screen zombies. I even mentioned my own parents.

I used to feel that way about the 80's but I still managed to have a blast when I got older in the 90's.

I want to experience a little of the end time. Just to see it happen and try to help some people. Then if a bullet took me out, I could die happy.

Feel the same. Before about 1950, the world was in decades of upheaval. Now it's deteriorated quite a bit over the last decade or two. I'm sure mankind will see better days, but it will be a struggle for many in the meantime.

Eddie Van Halen was an immigrant who was half Indonesian and DLR's parents were college professors at IU. Did that mean they had an agenda? Yeah, it was doing blow and girls. Which fine with me, I'm not going to pretend to care. Rush's lyrics are all about Ayn Rand, which I thought everyone knew at this point.

Anyhow, this place leads to screen zombification as much as anything.

The world has been going downhill with the advent of better brainwashing through radio, TV, and movies. Increased urbanization is also to blame. People in cities are more disconnected from reality and easily led.

I used to think the dystopian worlds portrayed in the movies were shown as ridiculous extremes to prove a point. Now I see them as our fast approaching reality.

At $10 per hour on first temp job in 1981, big money for temp work at the time, my entire monthly tech bill (phone, tv and no internet) was $18 for a landline. Don't know how people shop brick and mortar for shoes and clothing while making just a bit more than that, much less pay for internet and cable, which I thankfully gave up on over a decade ago.

Discernment of the reliability of Independent journalism on the net is FAR preferable to paying a cable company to program me. There weren't 22-year-old mask nazi power-trippers in every store who don't have the time to learn the truth. Who cares at that age, anyway? It's ruining businesses all over, small and large.

Nordstrom Rack - big ol' mask nazis. Online half the price of outlets and discount. Voting with the Wallet is always the way to go.

Similar for me, I'm 48 now but was "partying" at about 12 (not that I recommend that).

I also started working at 12 in an ice cream shop where the Iranian owner paid me cash under the table.

Bought my first car at 15 and had my learner's permit. Snuck out with my 15 year old friend one night and we drove to Balboa Point (the young person hangout near Newport Beach, CA) and we drove around with just me having my learner's permit!

At age 16 we started driving down to Tijuana on the weekends to party at the gigantic nightclubs. The age to get in was supposed to be 18 but they always let us in. They had sand volleyball courts on the roof and we'd be drinking and paying volleyball at night, lit up by the lights of Tiajuana.

As you can tell, I didn't have much adult supervision as a kid, LOL...but I always had money because by my teens I was waiting tables. I'd get back from Tijuana at 5am and work an all day shift at the breakfast house starting at 6am. It was easy at that age.
