I was just starting to draw down on one of my pandemic meat freezers.....maybe keep them full for now.....I added to my freeze dried meat supply.....btw the prices on the Mountain House site is more expensive than buying from Amazon......

I'm wondering if the meat supply problem is also causing the shortage of pet foods.....

Where do you find that sin in the Bible? I agree that people can be awful and slaughter houses can be awful. I'm not advocating for inhumane practices. But, I would like a Biblical reference if you have one.

wow...4 pages of this topic...OK, I'll chime in...

two weeks ago I sold 7 cow-calf pairs for $1,800 each, sold same day I put them on craigslist and didn't have to negotiate on price at all. Here in central Virginia there is a shortage of quality animals for shipping out west to the feed lots...only junk around here, according the the guy who purchased...he hauls loads of semi's from here to there and so he knows.

but that's not the whole story. I had been slaughtering a steer every other year for a while now...my meat processor normally shuts down over the summer from June to October because he doesn't get enough business and it costs a lot to keep the freezers going...so when I called back in March of this year, he says his next open date is October...to which I say, "oh, I forgot you shut down during the summer." he then lets me know that he is running at full capacity all summer long...doesn't know why but everyone seems to want to process this year.

so back to the story of selling my cattle, I asked the buyer/hauler if he is experiencing any delays at local meat processors and he tells me that up where he is around Winchester, there is a two year wait for an appointment.

so there you go...something is changing fundamentally in the cattle industry.

keep in mind that feed lots are in the midwest...where all the grain is grown...it takes about 4 lbs. of grain to get 1 lb. on the animal (without growth hormones), so obviously it is more economical to ship the cattle to where the grain is vs. the other way around.

Since covid everyone has been yelling shortage...but it hasn't really developed yet...that, imo is because there has always been a lot of live slaughter cattle all around that needed to be soaked up...and so with a slight price increase in feeder and slaughter cattle, the soaking up commenced...but is now complete. this is why all those folks with cattle are booking slots for slaughter...they can see it clearly.

ok, back to our normal programming...

Athletic person here. I run 5 - 7 miles per day and lift every other day. A nine minute mile for a 50 year old here isn't too bad. I also bike from time to time, usually about 27 to 35 miles. Heat and cold doesn't bother me.

Yes, I can call people fat if they are fat. Which I've seen many super fat families buying up all the beef at Sam's (all on EBT). Meat packed so high on the pull carts. THAT is just plain stingy and no wonder why the meat and the entire food industry is struggling.

People need to stop stuffing their damned pie holes. Why not only eat what you need whether it's plants or meat?

Actually like bear if it's done right. Have had the most excellent hunters stew someone made and it was excellent.

And yeah, I was just wondering how this trend will affect the hunting industry now.

In Oregon they aren't gonna allow you to slaughter cows but you can eat them after they die. When they push this into other states meat prices are gonna skyrocket.

Who cares anyways, beef is so bad for you. I eat fish and venison only, and have a body 20 years younger than my age. When I got my first colonoscopy the doctor was amazed at my health.

I'd get both. You can lose a complete flock of birds or all your bunnies very easily. Be a lion, not a panda.

to eat a cow...to eat anything you have to kill it and drain it of blood...

You shoot it and slit its throat to drain the blood immediately...

You cannot consume a cow you found in the morning that died overnight unless you want to get sick and die...

animals start to decompose almost immediately...

doubt any such bill will pass in any state that says you can only eat something that died...
