Anyone Familiar With Opossums?
Saturday night 2 opossums got hit by a car or cars? I don't know if they were both hit by the same car or not.

Anyway, the wife went to pick up our daughter yesterday from school and when they came back, our daughter saw 2 baby possums in the front yard, out by the road, just rambling around. She gathered them up and put them in a box. She wanted to keep them but I said no and had her take them into the woods behind our house.

The wife went with her, and she says they went a couple hundred yards into the woods. The wife went to pick her up again today, and lo and behold, the same 2 possums are back out by the road, rambling around.

I'm like, wtf?!?! Are they the same 2 or are these 2 different ones? They look the same, size wise and whatnot. While I was typing this thread, the wife spotted another one in the yard. So now we have 3.

My daughter thinks it is sign from God that she was meant to care for these, lol. Maybe it is, idk.

Has anyone ever raised a possum? I need help.

Give them cat food. I feed them on my porch every night. They don't live long - only 3-4 years so don't get too attached to them. Some people say they stink, honestly I don't smell anything but have only been as close as 3 feet away. Cats get along with them great too. One night I had a raccoon eating, and behind him was a possum and behind him was a cat. All in line waiting to eat and no fighting! LOL.

Saved 3 of them little critters last summer.

I just Fed them some canned and dry cat food and made sure they could get some clean water.

2 of them still come around almost nightly for a snack and the cats have basically adopted them.

Re: Anyone Familiar With Opossums?
Opossums are VERY Beneficial critters, they keep tick populations down, but when they can't find grubs or rotting fruit, DO love digging in the garbage cans, search animal rescue people specializing in Opossums, also, local vets may know of people that rehabilitate baby Opossums to be released into the wild...

the reason they returned to the road, is because they are trying to find their Momma.... 8-::/

Completely false... Opossums cannot carry any disease that harms man, due to the fact they are Marsupials, very cool blooded creatures, Opossums are world renowned for being one of the few animals that cannot even carry rabies, their blood is too cool for the rabies to survive, also, Opossums are completely immune to all poisonous snakes in North America..

Opossums are the ONLY North American animal that is a Marsupial, they feed and finish gestating their young in a pouch, just like a kangaroo, as they get older, they like to ride on mom's back as they search for grubs, ticks, disgusting bugs you don't like, and yes, if they smell your garbage and food in it, your garbage can will get a visit!

That's cool but I suspect our daughter will tire of them and they might wind up dying.

We are going to release these into the woods as well. We are going to let nature take its course.

Thanks for all of the help folks.

Re: Anyone Familiar With Opossums?
Possums are cool and relatively harmless, the comments about not carrying rabies is true.
About 15 years ago one of our dogs went after a possum in the yard. Wife was heartbroken, she thought the possum was dead. She got a shovel to bury him. After digging the hole, she went back to get the carcass and it was gone. I had to laugh when she told me. I told her he was just playing possum and she stated she did not know that. She’s not blonde by the way.

That isn't true at all. Marsupials carry many diseases. In fact Armadillos are the only known mammalian carrier of Leprosy in North America.

raised one as a pet when I was a teenager, very clean animals if they have a choice, very friendly, just feed them and give them safe place to sleep, should be able to turn them out into woods in month or so.... they carry no diseases and they EAT TICKS,,,, so don't hurt them...
