My personal take is that what we are seeing is copy cat type "end time" events being orchestrated by the evil one and his minions at the top of the pyramid. Of course this will also include most at different levels of the pyramid all the way down to the masses.

Most of it is based on FEAR and Psychological Operations with quite a bit of "sorcery/pharmakia" so to speak.
