Because with a puncture wound such as a bad cat bite, other stuff can get in there. I think a doc might recommend a tetanus shot. It's been around for decades, I don't think they've fooled with it. It's good to get tetanus boosters periodically anyway - I think it's every 10 years, as lockjaw is one hell of a way to go. very unlikely in your case though. I think the shots are safe, I've had the shot myself. It's one of the VERY VERY few vaccines I'd actually consider using. I can't think of another one off the top of my head - even polio vax had issues.

You need a rabies vaccine. Unfortunately. It's really not worth the risk.

Alcohol then later hydrogen peroxide. Rabies is a potential, but according to my doctor there has not been a case of cat-involved rabies in 40 years.
 Quoting: We Who Watch.

Rabies in cats is very rare. Unless the cat is acting peculiarly and you would know, it's pretty obvious, I wouldn't worry about rabies. It's more about infection, especially of any bites.

Rabies isn't an issue - it's the bacteria in their mouth.

Take amoxicillin to fight the internal infection.

Make a paste of ground turmeric and honey and put it on the wound. I cured a bad staph infection this way and it is my go to slave for every single wound and spider bite. You can also drink turmeric and honey as a tea or blended with coconut milk (golden milk). Turmeric is an excellent for anti-inflammatory food, which will help the swelling from cat bites.
 Quoting: Happy in Nature

Thank you. I'm going to try your spider bite trick on my husband who is highly allergic to them. We sleep in the same bed at our country house and he wakes up looking like he went to war while I have nothing. We have the same blood type and eat/drink pretty much the same so it has to be an allergy to their venom...i guess. Poor guy. Ill check out your turmeric and honey on him.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79295665

I had two brown recluse bites on my knewe (at the same time) that I cured this way.

Not too long ago I read that echinacea can be used as an emergency antivenin. I haven't tried it on spider bites, but I will experiment.

I also use a combo of frankincense and myrrh on insect bites and stings. It's cleaner than the turmeric paste, which stains clothes unfortunately.
 Quoting: Happy in Nature

Two brown recluse bites on your knee at the SAME time? Yikes! Do you know where you encountered them or anything? That always scares me! Ground turmeric & honey cured the bites? That’s awesome. Was it jarred turmeric already ground or did you grind the root yourself? Any specific kind of honey?

Sorry for a million questions but this is interesting info that could be incredibly helpful to people. I sometimes buy that powdered golden milk mix and it’s so delicious. Happy you are cured!

Cats teeth penetrate all the way through the skin. Even if the cat does not have rabies, you'll most definitely need antibiotics.

It depends on where you are. He knows the cat anyway. I've been around cats my entire 65 years and have never seen nor heard of a rabid cat. It might be if it got bitten itself by a raccoon, which are not uncommonly rabid, but it's actually quite rare in cats. I'm sorry...that's just the truth.

I tend to agree with this because a cat bite can be a really nasty thing if they sink their teeth. You have to consider that they actually kill and rip apart small animals - I've seen them do it. That's some pretty sharp teeth there. If it were just scratches you could probably take care of them with hydrogen peroxide, but watch out for red streaks as people have said.

Holy fuck I hope you read my comment I had this happen to me long ago, I came upon a stray cat that had it's guts ripped out probably hit by a car and I approached it and it screamed and scratched bit me. I was of the mindset I would end its suffering and found a big rock and smashed its head in. I didn't know if the cat had what so I went to get rabbis shots because you can't fuck around with rabbis. As soon as you realize you have it you're dead.

Shots were 7 shots over a cpl of weeks and I am fine. No side effects or anything

If you know the cat and the cat wasnt foaming at the mouth when it bit you just clean it out and youre fine

Scratches aint shit

Cats dont have covid dont believd that shit
 Quoting: Candy KABOOM!! !!!

I understand why you bashed the cats head in, (I probably would have too to end its suffering) but, didn't you know that you should have brought the, now dead, cat in to be tested before undergoing rabies shots on yourself? I shudder to think if it were me.

Getting rabies shots is not a fun short term past time when the cat could have been tested beforehand.

Maybe way back then - you didn't realize that, eh?

You really need to learn to be more polite, btw.

As for that cat, yes that is a good example of rabies in a cat - it's affects the nervous system and makes the animal unsteady, they can't stay on their legs and weave around and can be very vicious because they're...well...crazy at this point. I'm sure Butch would know if his cat was acting like that. There are some areas where rabies is a real problem for all animals but it IS rare in cats. Most vets have never seen it.

I hate to say it but if there is any question I think they usually kill the animal to see if it has rabies in its brain/spinal cord. I don't think they like to just hold them for observation because that would give rabies time to develop in the human.

Those are also the kinds of gloves you should handle any cat with that you're unsure of.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29910105

That may not mean much if there are very few rabid domestic animals to BEGIN with. Rabies is almost always found in wild animals, not domestic. If a cat gets rabies, it's because they've been eating or fighting with a rabid wild animal. Birds and mice and the kinds of creatures they go after don't have rabies. You can ask vets in most areas if they have ever seen a cat with rabies and the answer will be NO. It IS very rare. It might be more common in some areas where rabies is a problem in general and cats (or dogs) are allowed to roam freely.

You see, I actually have had cats for 6 fucking decades and I don't have to read the Merck Manual. You're welcome.

From what you said, the Cat was aggressive because it did not want to come in. I had a cat years ago that definitely was not rabid, he was a house cat indoor only that got out and wouldn't come back. When I caught him the next day and picked him up to bring him in he freaked out and bit and scratched because he was clearly saying NO I don't want to come in. I did not go to the Dr, I did not take antibiotics either, I just took high doses of Vit C. and I was fine.
You said you had the cat vaccinated for rabies. One rabies vaccine will confer a LIFETIME of protection. There have been tests done on elderly cats who had received the rabies vaccine many years earlier and this was confirmed.
Rabies is not a worry. Clean the wound, do NOT put any greasy thing like neosporin on it because you want the wound to be able to BREATHE and drain if need be.
You will fine. I am a cat expert with decades of experience,
don't listen to the fear mongers.

For those who worry about rabies, these are the animals most cats like to dine on when they can get one. The only time a cat may get rabies is from something like a raccoon or maybe a dog. But the animals they chase and eat...DON'T GET RABIES:

""Small rodents (like squirrels, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, chipmunks, rats, and mice) and lagomorphs (including rabbits and hares) are almost never found to be infected with rabies and have not been known to transmit rabies to humans."

My last cat was particularly fond of chipmunks although he also brought me whatever was left of his bird feasts. Usually just the wings. The mice....he kept for himself.

That is just to be extra safe as it is a puncture wound (I'm assuming it's a puncture wound, perhaps more than one) and many docs would say to get one to be on the safe side. And as I say, it's good to get your booster shot periodically anyway. I know tetanus is pretty rare now but it was once a very feared killer, even when I was a kid.

Re: POLL: HELP! I got bit and scratched badly by a stray cat! (it's a new cat I just got, that got out, then I TRIED to catch!)
Ah, I missed that you had the cat vax'd for rabies - then it's a non-issue for you anyway. That's one of the first things I would do with any stray - take them to the vet and make sure they don't have anything that would make ME sick, get them their rabies shot, and any other meds they might need. My last cat was a stray and needed a lot of medical help especially for his thyroid. But with us he was as gentle as could be and never scratched or nipped.
