Depends how deep the punctures and scratches are. If you washed with antibacterial soap and hot water right away you're probably ok. I was bit in the calf by my cat who never left the house his entire life, and it developed into an infection. I had to get a tetanus booster and a round of antibiotics. The bacteria that naturally live in cats' mouths are beneficial to them but not to humans.

Unless you can catch the cat and have it tested for Rabies.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77384380

you must kill the animal to test it for Rabies, they test the Brain, best thing to do is cage it and watch for any symptoms which could take weeks or longer, if you can't catch it then you should be treated for Rabies! Sounds like OP was trying to catch a scared and hungry Cat!
 Quoting: M R E

he said the cat had been vaccinated for rabies. Otherwise, yup. Need to bring the cat to the ER with you. I think they dissect the brain to find out ASAP if it had rabies.

But if vaccinated already, no problem with rabies.

When I was a kid I was sleeping over a friends house. When I woke up in my sleeping bag her cat was standing there waiting for me to wake up so it could bite me. It punctured my thumb which was just laying there.

I stuck the thumb in my mouth and that was the extent of what I did for it. I lived. YMMV

Yes, they will insist on giving a tetanus shot if you have not had one recently.

BUt basically it is like a lottery.

If nothing too bad got in the wound, no problem.

If one of the real nasty bugs got in there, with the best care possible, you might live.

You might win the wound lottery 20 times and then on 21, you get a superbug and that's all she wrote.

Do I have to go to the ER / Urgent care?

This was a cat of mine, this is new to me, that I tried to catch and retrieve from wandering the streets for 4-5 days.

Do I need to worry about infection on my hands via bites and scratches?

I was a veterinary asst for two years.

Yes, go to ER.

Cat bites are very serious.

You will need antibiotics.

No need!

Alcohol then later hydrogen peroxide. Rabies is a potential, but according to my doctor there has not been a case of cat-involved rabies in 40 years.

The only way to test it for rabies is lopping its head off and dissecting its brain.

Yes but not for rabies, for oral bacteria cats carry. Deep bites require Antibiotics

Just know that in order to effectively test the animal for rabies they will destroy the animal. Sorry man...Just take care of your cuts with triple antibiotic and say a prayer for you and for the cat every three hours. :)

I've seen some bad infections from cats. You need to head into the ER.

Yup.
You better go over to the instacare.
I had a cat dig his claws into my kneecap once.
So hard I had to pry it’s claws out one by one.
It was extremely painful and I did get this joint pain and fever.
I felt really bad and it was a very painful wound.

I voted no because I got over it.
I was able to take some old antibiotics I had and clean it daily and first aid myself.

Now that I think about it....you should go to the instacare.

Sorry this happened to you.
Hope you feel better soon.

No. First wash it well with soap and hot waater. Then go to the ER because you can actually get 'cat scratch fever' which is a very serious illness. Please don't wait OP.

Yes, immediately after the bite, I washed the bites and scratches with Hibaclens antibacterial soap (medical grade antibiotic soap), then put iodine on all the bites and scratches.

I went to the ER earlier today and got a script for Augmentin. Doctor did not seem too concerned otherwise.
He said any infection I might have seems to be under control.

That's why we self vaccinate our barn cats for rabies, and we do it ourselves. You can buy it online, I believe it's RabVac.
