My dogs dug up my marigolds.

Just the marigolds and nothing else.

Something dug up my azalea bush last night. I even sprinkled cayenne pepper around it when I planted it a few days ago. Very frustrating, I am constantly fighting critters around here.

I found some cinnamon sticks in the pantry and randomly laid them around my plants. We'll see how that goes. I think the fish fertilizer is luring them all in.

Just planted some caladium bulbs, yup they gut dug up!

I think you're on to something, it must be the fertilizer.

Had to replant my sunflower seeds, critters got them too. Same as last year.

I sprinkle garlic powder around my new plantings but I think the rain has been washing it away. I'll be interested to hear how your cinnamon works.

Sorry to hear about your marigolds but I bet they'll look beautiful wherever they end up. My favorite flower... I have 3 flats to put in my front bed.

Waiting for a dry spell so I can go pull weeds. Hubby took the trimmer around the edges of the garden and beheaded one of my blueberry bushes on accident, he is no longer allowed to trim near my garden, lol. I've ordered a lightweight electric trimmer and am looking forward to trying it out.

Hi OP. I now have an allotment and it is keeping me sane in this mad world. I heartily recommend Charles Dowding on YouTube. His "no dig" method has really inspired me and his videos (and him) are totally relaxing, informative and beautiful.
I am now officially obsessed with making compost! Good luck with your garden hf

Re: Who is gardening? It is very therapeutic!
I think the cinnamon sticks worked. I haven't had anything else dug up. I am going to try using the fish fertilizer one more time in a few days, but at half strength, and see what happens.

I also have herbs popping up, so the strong smell of coriander might be keeping the pests away too. I haven't looked into that, but it makes sense that the strong scent would deter them.

So far, I haven't killed anything. I was a little worried about my lavender after transplant, but it perked right up after a couple days.

As for the marigolds, well....they're popping up all over the place and I'm just going to leave them be for now. If they start to look overcrowded or if my veggies start looking puny, I'll do something about the marigold overload then.

So far, so good. Things are flourishing. My body feels so much better with all the vitamin D synthesizing in the sun. My doggies are just about beside themselves with joy that I'm always out there with them, even if it is just to make sure they don't dig up anything else lol

Pick up a few things and give it a try. You can easily spend about $10 at the Dollar Tree and get a few little containers growing to start out. I went all in like a nutjob and I have over 30 containers outside with various plants. And I'm still planting things. I can't stop. It is just too exciting!

Is an allotment like a community garden? Sounds like a great spot to learn all sorts of new things from others who might have more experience. I'm not really a people person, but I will talk for hours about plants. I'm a weirdo.

The squirrels stopped taking my potatoes once they sprouted. I don't know if that is because they don't want sprouted taters or if it was because I also put out a bunch of cinnamon sticks in random places around the garden. They've left things alone since then. Maybe try that?

6 weeks in to my very 1st garden. Finally have my own patio/balcony that gets am sun.

Have over 2 dozen veggies & herbs growing in plastic pots. Vegas soil sucks so bought miracle grow. Only one in a huge condo complex with a garden.

Within a month was eating daily kale salads. Homegrown kale is much milder tasting than even iceberg lettuce. Has a very different texture too.

Beefsteak tomato plants are now several feet high from tiny cuttings. See baby green cherry tomatoes too.

Yellow squash has the most beautiful flowers.

Mint, anise, oregano are delicious.

Didn't know gardening was so easy. Each plant and I get daily doses of sun, as I rotate them to sunnier spots and add water.

Question for the seasoned gardeners:

My dogs dug and spread marigolds everywhere and now they are sprouting up with my spinach. Should I pull them or will the spinach do okay with the competition? They are everywhere. Absolutely everywhere omg
 Quoting: Only Me

Marigolds keep a lot of nasty insects away. I always have a bunch between the garden and areas with insects like woods, wild grasses.
 Quoting: Nonentity

Yes, and I used to put chives between everything. They let off a plant growth hormone used by other plants (they like shade hence they want the plants around them to grow bigger).

Great tip, thank you. I'm going to try that.

Now is the time to plan and start adding garden space for next year. If you so desire. If people are interested I will write it out and give links and what not. No digging required and easy really.

I've been using fabric grow pots. It's nice to be able to move them around :)

I use them too. They're better versus standard type pots. Only down side is its a little harder to transplant.

Watering with hydrogen peroxide can help remedy drowning roots. But you need a careful amount mixed in water and not over do it. Just enough will add oxygen in the soil with out burning the plants roots.

There's lots of stuff online about that.

Using tap water? If so it's better to let it evaporate the chlorine. I let my plant water sit 1 day with no lid. Though that's not very practical for a modest outdoor garden. Mostly for house plants and special outdoor plants.

Having seen it in large cannabis grows...if you add a simple airstone (like you get for an aquarium) to the water while sitting you get some of the benefits of H2O2 and the chlorine offgasses quicker.

An allotment is an "allotted" piece of land which I rent at £50 per year from our local authorities. It's a huge bit of land divided up for people to rent. So yes there are other people down there which can be very handy but like you, I'd probably much rather they weren't there!
