I have a garden. I can't work the ground until June because of the rain. Arkansas gets a lot of rain in the spring. I really like gardening. I have strawberries, blackberries and some fruit trees.

Strawberries and tomatoes are my favorites.
My second favorites are potatoes and green beans :)

I planted a lot of flowers - lavender, marigold, 4 o'clocks, morning glory, several other varieties.

And I have a giant T-Rex aloe plant that keeps trying to climb out of its pot because it just keeps growing.

For a beginner, my experience with gardening has been surprisingly simple and very enjoyable.

I really should have started gardening sooner. I had no clue it was as much fun as it is. So exciting to watch things grow that I planted myself !!!

I've watched a few videos on installing a drip system. Cali Kim on youtube is very informative. I like to watch her and MiGardener.

It doesn't look nearly as intimidating as I thought it would be, so I think I'll go out there tomorrow and give it a go. I have had this drip irrigation kit for months and I've been so intimidated by it that I haven't even opened the box yet.

I can't believe I didn't think of okra!!! Is it too late to start it from seed? I'll have to check.

Got my seeds all in before the rain! I see others also took advantage of the full moon to plant.

Trying new things this year: sugar snap peas, green beans, radishes, yellow squash and pumpkins. Tomatoes peppers lettuce cabbage carrots and spinach too. The garden will be cram packed but maybe less room for weeds.

Raccoons raided my corn last year so I'm still debating if I want to try again.

Happy growing everyone. May your harvest be abundant!

We have lots of gardeners on GLP. I love it!

Also, my lettuce has been growing like mad. Looks like I have a ton of salad in my future!

I wish I could grow lettuce. It's too hot where I live. Never forms a head and sends up a bloom stalk quickly. Even if I plant it in winter. Same thing with celery and cilantro.

That's an interesting combination. One hot weather crop and three cool weather crops. Be careful with overwatering okra especially if the ground is still cool. Okra is prone to damping off.

I'm growing my cool weather seeds in the shade, and I think we should be okay here in Oklahoma for another month or so. If not, at least I tried :)

Freeze warning tonight! Ahhh I should have waited!

ahhh

Guess I'll be covering my strawberry plants again. I also have 4 tomato plants I just put in the dirt but everything else should be ok because it's just seeds.

I have some baby tomato plants I sprouted from seeds a few weeks ago, they're still inside so at least I have back-up.

Last year everything was a month behind because the spring was so cold and wet. Ohio weather sucks!

It's all good though... improvise, adapt, overcome!

Happy Friday my fellow farmers!

I've seen cinderblock beds raised to waist height for older people/people with disabilities. Higher raised beds (cinderblock is best, no wood critters/rot) help with heavy rains.

And that kneeling bench! And that weird garden wobbler chair, but I don't know how sturdy they are.

I've seen people use containers on tables and benches too. There are lots of solutions :)

Something dug up my azalea bush last night. I even sprinkled cayenne pepper around it when I planted it a few days ago. Very frustrating, I am constantly fighting critters around here.

Was out around 7:30 this morning. Finished hoeing the tomato bed and put in a load of soil.
Gonna plant Arkansas Travelers later today. I found a 6 pack at a local rural hardware store a few weeks ago. First I’ve been able to find in a few years.

I found some cinnamon sticks in the pantry and randomly laid them around my plants. We'll see how that goes. I think the fish fertilizer is luring them all in.

Question for the seasoned gardeners:

My dogs dug and spread marigolds everywhere and now they are sprouting up with my spinach. Should I pull them or will the spinach do okay with the competition? They are everywhere. Absolutely everywhere omg

Let's take a deep breath and relax by the plants, you guys. Seriously - this world has gone to absolute shit and I went and sat outside barefoot in my little (beginner's) garden, and I literally FELT my blood pressure go down...I felt my body relax.

So this is my first actual garden. I've grown things here and there, but this is the first time I actually sat down and planned out an actual garden. I saw my first potato sprouts yesterday and squealed with delight. I grew that!

There are few things as exciting as watching veggies grow that you put there yourself.

Oh. my. goodness....why didn't I start doing this earlier???

Look up electroculture. I have 1st hand experience with it and it's very real. Any where atmospheric electric flux is concentrated into soil the plants thrive, grow bigger.

Aluminum downspouts, power line ground wires, fences over concrete that lead to soil, etc....

Metal railing not grounded, attach a wire and lead it to the garden. Plants LOVE it.

Marigolds keep a lot of nasty insects away. I always have a bunch between the garden and areas with insects like woods, wild grasses.

I think it will be ok but, marigolds like a higher Ph. If too acidic they get black spots on leaves.

Try it and see. Some plants grow well together, some don't. Trial and error.

Yes, and I used to put chives between everything. They let off a plant growth hormone used by other plants (they like shade hence they want the plants around them to grow bigger).

More along the line of lawn eradication to make semi-fertile soil open for expansion if need be, cheaply and with minimal effort! 'Tis the season to think of expansion.
