I've read this story a few times today in different locations, and I don't think it is saying what people think it is.

It's not saying that unvaccinated are safer.

It is saying the unvaccinated are much more likely to be infected with one of the regular strains of COVID than with the South African strain.

Because the SA strain is so rare and the unvaccinated are susceptible to any strain, they contract the common strain far more often then the SA strain.

However, since vaccinated people are protected against the common strain, when they do become infected, they are likely to be infected with the SA strain.

So people concluding the unvaccinated person is safer are wrong.

However, the real story is that this corroborates some of the speculation of immunity escape leading to much worse pandemic. Because the vaccinated people are safe from the common strain, they are now much more likely to catch and become infectious with the more dangerous SA strain. They then become spreaders, except unlike unvaccinated people who are spreadin the less virulent common strain, they are spreading the much more dangerous SA strain.

In short, vaccination of some people is putting the unvaccinated people in more danger as the vaccinated people are more likely to contract and spread the more virulent SA strain.

But it's quite unusual for someone to be simultaneously infected with two strains. If an unvaxed person gets another strain, that in itself apparently protects them from simultaneously getting the more dangerous SA strain.

And so your logic is not correct. It could still be safer to be unvaxed -- totally aside from bad effects of the vax itself.

If I were to guess this means Pfizer is going to tank Monday. Also does this increase pressure on all the other vaccines to succeed? Probably and it might be hard to tell where we will be in a year.


My fear and others shared that their could be a ping pong fight that would actually make the virus much more virulent faster. We will be forced to constantly vaccinate and it will fail each time. What is within my comprehension is that I've never heard of a patient having two strains at once. I would guess a PCR test could detect the strain and whether two strains are present.
