The Falling Away: Or the Great Apostasy
The Falling Away: Or the Great Apostasy
The return of Our Lord Jesus Christ is one of the most fascinating topics we as Christians can study. There have been countless books, articles and movies on the subject, but there is still a lot of confusion on the timing of this glorious event.
As any one acquainted with Bible prophecy knows there are myriad theories on the subject, from pre-trib, mid-trib to post tribulation. Some Bible teachers perform what I call Biblical gymnastics to make their theory fit the Word of God, but I honestly believe that God has made the return of Jesus Christ so abundantly clear and easy for us, if we read scripture in context, without our own pre-conceived ideals. So with that thought in mind lets turn to the Holy scriptures.
The most definitive timeline and event found in scripture concerning the return of Jesus Christ is 2nd Thessalonians Chapter 2. Paul is writing this epistle to the church in Thessalonica for the express purpose of clearing up their confusion on the return of Jesus! It seems someone was confusing this church and had even convinced the Thessalonians that they had “missed” the return of Our Lord! But like a good teacher that Paul was, he set out with love and patience to correct this church. Let’s read Paul’s first words in the 2nd chapter of 2nd Thess. “ Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him“. Let’s breakdown each verse as we go, we see the topic of this chapter is the return of Jesus and our gathering together into him, known to us as the rapture. Now to verse three which is the most clear and defined timeline found in scripture! 2nd Thess. 2:3 “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition” We are warned not to be deceived! For that day which is the day of Christ (known as the day of the Lord in the Old Test.) shall not come until the falling away comes first. Lets stop and define what the “falling away” is, the Greek word that is translated into “falling away” is apostasia or in modern English apostasy. The definition of apostasy is defection or revolt, keep in mind that Paul was writing to Christians, not unbelievers, this is key!
You cannot defect or revolt from something unless you belong to it in the first place. Unbelievers will not defect or revolt from Christianity, only people who say they are Christians could defect or revolt. I believe that an event will occur in the near future that will drastically alter the Christian faith, remember Paul and our Lord constantly remind us not to be deceived! This will not be some small event, something earthshaking will take place which will test the faith of every believer on planet earth. It could be a “lost” scroll or even archeologists claiming they have found the grave of Jesus of Nazareth! How would you react my dear Christian friend?
I pray that your faith not be shaken but that you would realize that the end of this age is close and boldly live in the will of God! Remember our Lord himself when asked about the sign of his coming responded with Matt.24:4 “ And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.” I also find it very interesting a rhetorical question Jesus asked himself in Luke 18:8 “Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth? I pray that when we see these things take place we lift up our heads; for our redemption draweth nigh. Amen!

It's really irritating to see people misinterpretting revelation and preaching it like it's fact. None of these interpretations are fact. The anitchrist will not rule for over 1000 years. In fact, everything in the bible states it will be a short tribulation. I'm thinking 2-4 years, possible longer in the false peace. Also, in my interpretation most of revelation already has happened. The persecution of the christians, the woman representing israel in the desert, the dragon trying to kill the woman israel (hitler) etc... anyways, point is no one knows and it's all speculation. Where are you getting this 1260 years? in the bible it says days doesn't it? I am at work now and can't refute this nonsense liek I would like.

Well, you nailed that one Mathetes.

Though why anyone would buy into the claims of a Hollywood Film Maker is beyond me. People are so ready to grab onto anything that leads them away from the truth. It would be comical if not for the deadly consequences.

I'm often in awe, seeing how this is all coming together exactly as the Bible said it would. Amazing Days. hf

Absolutely NOT what the Bible teaches.

The Anti-Christ rules for a short time, possibly as short as 7 years.

It's Christ who rules for 1000 years.

Where did the author get this 1260 year number?

Re: The Falling Away: Or the Great Apostasy
1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, 2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. 5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? 6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. 7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. 8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: 9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

2 Thessalonians 2
King James Bible

Paul refers to 2 events here in verse 1:

1. "by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ"
2. "and by our gathering together unto him"

The first is the Day of the Lord(Christ) and the second is the rapture(gathering together)

We are then warned to "not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand"

They were worried they were living in the Day of the Lord. But Paul clearly shows them that that day CANNOT come until other things happen:

1. "except there come a falling away first"
2. "and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition"

The Day of the Lord is the tribulation period. But that day cannot come until 2 other events occur, the falling away and the revealing of the man of sin.

So what is the falling away? Paul reiterates it in verse 6:

"And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. 7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. 8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed

So, here's the order. He(The Holy Spirit) who indwells all believers is preventing the revealing of the antichrist. He is the restrainer of evil. The "saltness" of the believers, who are the vessels(temple) of the Holy Spirit, is preventing the revealing of pure evil. Once the rapture occurs the restrainer of evil is "taken out of the way".

Rapture then revealing
falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed

These verses are parallel. The falling away is really the "catching away" of the Church. Or if you will, the falling away of the Holy Spirit from the earth. Once you see this it all becomes clear. The great falling away is not an apostasy, it is the departure of the Holy Spirit from the earth which precedes the revealing of the antichrist

Re: The Falling Away: Or the Great Apostasy
I thought the great falling away would have the bible or gods word banned from society.

But falling away from a circus or church...no...just the called out ones losing once their place, greater than backsliding...like outlawing.
