Car dealerships in my area look like ghost towns
Looking for a decent used vehicle for my daughter....what a joke.

Not only are most of the pre-owned obvious junk/problems, the new inventory is sparse. Most of the vehicles are in rows, and are cookie cutter identical SUVs, just a few different colors.

A lot of dealers have widely spaced their vehicles on the lot to give the illusion that it's "full".

I guess it's it's this way everywhere?

Are you looking for a specific vehicle? If not you could probably find good reliable transportation by haunting government fleet auctions for low mileage units that 'aged out' instead of being sold because of mileage or damage. I've picked up some really nice class 7 trucks this way but the same rule applies to passenger cars. Just don't be in a hurry or get caught in a bidding frenzy or you'll pay too much.

Only shmucks buy used vehicles from a dealer. Go find the same car for 30% less in a private sale

None of those left that aren't a piece of shit, or overpriced to the point of being ridiculous.

I've bought my last two trucks from individuals, and have been well served by them. Now, a good used vehicle from an individual, fairly priced, is almost nonexistent.

That's what happens when you pay people more to stay home from work than they would if they worked...and a stimulus per person on top of that. Then there are the parasites making usd by trading crypto.

Re: Car dealerships in my area look like ghost towns
My local Ford is empty and I assume they are waiting on new F150s
to show up. I have never seen the lot that empty.
other odd thing I notice is they keep new cars in the back and used
in the front. Last time I got car and shopped around it was torture.
Salesman would almost kidnap you. They would say I can’t let you leave
till you talk to my manager. The manager would try to shake you down why your not buying a car today.

Vehicles are bringing retail at dealer auctions... we quit buying for our lot until it cools down. I don't care if I have no inventory, I'm not going to get loaded up in stuff and then the bottom fall out.

Yup. I’ve owned about 15 cars in my life and never once bought a used or new car from a dealer. I’ve always bought my cars off of Craigslist.

I’ve also worked at 5 different dealerships. Dealers mark up their cars to whatever the NADA value is for the car while paying people about 50% of the KBB private party value is for their car.

The difference between KBB private party value and NADA value is NADA value is $2000-$4000 more.

Why the hell anyone would buy a car from a dealership is beyond me. Most of the time you don’t get any kind of warranty with it. Best I’ve seen is a 3 month limited warranty but I haven’t seen that in a long time.

What makes a car so special that you’d feel obligated to buy it from a dealership? It’s the same blind trust that people give to the mainstream media where no one has any accountability?

You want to pay $2k-4k extra for a car with no warranty when you’re fully responsible for the repairs it may need? No fucking chance in hell would I ever go through a dealer.

Not only that but when you finance a car through their loan agencies you’re also paying much higher loan interest than if you went through your own bank or credit union.

Here in CT, the used car dealers can’t keep enough in stock. TONS of people moving here from NY. Many who never had a car, now need one in the suburbs. Houses are sold on listing day, above asking price. Definitely an exodus from NY.

Get off your soap box.

If you illiterate souls would read the thread, you would understand that I've bought from individuals, and am not opposed to doing so. The fact is, there are few, if any, at a fair price.

People are pricing junk for about twice what it's worth.
