It’s spring time, eat some wild edible plants

Wild lettuce is coming onalong with chickweed and dandelions for salad I like young Russian thistle, cut while in the rosette stage before the stem shoots up. Trim the stickers off the leaf edges and boil up like spinach. It has a mild flavor which I like much better than spinach. This is a much under rated wild food. This year I want to try peeling the stems and cooking like asparagus, and also the roots.

Burdock roots are very popular in Japan, where they cultivate it. I've not tried it, as we have so little here that I just let it be.

My daughter is showing a lot of interest now in learning about the wild plants, which makes me very glad. I've showed my grandsons a few plants and my younger grandson really impressed a friend when he fixed the friend's nettle stings with dock like his grandma showed him. It kind of impressed me that he remembered it and put it to use!

We follow the logged units from the year before or the burns here in oregon. Morel hunting is also one of my favorite things to do as spring is a great time to wander the woods.i love berry season too from huckleberry to the black cap raspberries.

We are waiting for the dew berries ( like small black berries)

be careful in eastern US foraging, i have been trout fishing and morel hunting and just walking a trail to get trail cam pics and found ticks!!!

no morels yet, where i am we find morels, chantarelles ramps wild onion and wild asparagus. with spring gobblers and trout being stocked you can make quite spring feast!!!

I know a patch of black cherries that should be coming in next month and forage paw paws in the fall.

Know a place where noone goes and they fall and cover the ground like carpet and rot

That's good to know ! I've observed cats also like to munch on onion grass, even tho' many vets today advise against giving cats onions or garlic,years ago I had an encyclopedia of Pet remedies and garlic and onions were recommended to feed them for anti-parasitical and flea repellent properties....
i just wonder why current day vets would advise against this,
unless it's greed based to steer people into buying expensive chemicals...?

my brother finds golden chantarelles and i only at them becuase he had been eating them for a week and wasnt. morels are super easy though


I saw a guy on Wild Edibles on the out door channel make fritters from acorn flour and milkweed flower pods before they opened.

one o f my faves is the seed pods from maple trees, you know the helicopters???


you can eat the seeds and if you get em right you they have sugra water in them. kinda like a lima bean or the bean out of a green bean.


i eatem raw but can suautee in butter like lima or Butterbean

wood sorrell grow in my yard and it looks like shamrocks and the seed pods explode when you touch it ....

Did you know you can eat these nutritious, red-eyed bugs that are high in protein and low in fat? Deep fry them and serve with a hot mustard dipping sauce. Marinate them in teriyaki sauce. Bake them into a cake or pie. Put them in a dumpling. You name it.

Now that you've rearranged your face, know this: They're called the "shrimp of the land."

"We regularly eat the arthropods of the sea, and those are the shrimp, lobster and crabs," Betancourt told the news outlet, noting that "cicadas are arthropods, too."

Some who have dined on cicadas say they even taste a little like shrimp, according to Food & Wine.

The best time to harvest cicadas (again, stop making that face) is just after they emerge when they are molting — that is, shedding their skin. Morning hours are best, Betancourt told Lancaster Online.

"That's when they're softest," she said. "When they first emerge, they'll be kind of green in color, and after a few hours they'll harden."

They're still edible after hardening, but crunchy.

Egyptian spinach, no one will know it's food. You could have 10 of these trees on your property and no one would realize what it was.

I live in NJ. We just have poisonous fungus and poison ivy.

After all the dead/cooked food we eat in the winter months, I love to eat the first fresh greens that come up in the spring as a digestive restorative purge/cleanse. I usually have a salad with dandelion leaves, arugula, watercress (peppergrass), chives, onions, parsley and any volunteer greens that have come up like lettuce, kale and spinach.

I dream of them all year
And we are watching for cattails as well
I have many locations marked in my town that have copious cattails
Just finished making a batch of preserves with some high use cranberries from last year that I snagged in front of our library
There is wild food everywhere if you know what your looking for

Be very careful to never eat plants you're not 100% sure of. Things like hemlock can easily be confused with something else and will kill you. When studying wild edibles (beyond the usual dandelions and chickweed) you should take tours with very knowledgeable and reputable botanists or foragers. There's more to it than looking at pictures.

When in doubt leave it out.

should be up here in my neck of WV but we have hardly had any rain but we are getting a nice soaking rain today so i will be going out tomorrow or next day and do some looking/hunting! Gobblers are getting more active too!

we have Ramps too but i never cared for them, would if i
had too though!
