Re: Tolkien fans! Get in here!
Very nice! I'm a sucker for this stuff!

I'm drifting away from writing my spy series and working on Fantasy!!!

So much more fun and interesting. I thought it would require less research and I could just sit and write - LOL. How naïve is this boy...

I'm doing my maps in Wonderdraft - have you used that program?

Cheers!

.
 Quoting: Terp

No but as I'm not really going into fantasy but thinking of my own world, that might be really, really helpful! Thank you!!! I will check it out.

So making up names is kinda tough right? Anne McCaffery did this thing where she would drop consonants for her dragon riders. Or vowels, usually the second letter of the name. Felessen became F'lessen etc. Kinda neat. Don't let anything hold back your imagination. Happy writing! hugs
 Quoting: Fossy

YES!

Thinking up names is a huge waste of my time - LOL. Not just names for people, but cities, rivers, seas, etc. Search for "fantasy name generator" or "fantasy city name generator" - it helped me a lot. Like you said above, you can find something close to what you like and tweak it a bit =)

Wonderdraft is $30 I think - check it out on YouTube first. I broke down and bought it because I'm terrible at drawing and don't want to pay someone a ton of money to make maps. Even I made some decent maps!

.

Good luck in your writing as well! Will you share it with us? Do you have anything already?

Cheers!

I can't give you more green this week Fossy - hehe.

Very nice writing! You have a flair for your genre!

I think my writing is very methodical: this happened, then this happened, etc. I think I have a fun story to tell, but it will sound like a middle-aged guy from Oregon told a story about dragons and elves - LOL.

You do a great job of showing and not telling in a poetic way that fits the time period =)

Still reading it...

I read all of Martins GOT stuff. Afterward I was asked my opinion.

"Written at a fourth grade level." But I really liked the tv series! Except the end which was fraught with things I hated...

Thanks! hugs the hardest thing I struggled with was moving too fast. I had to learn to sloooow down and slowly work through the scene. Especially dialogue.

Thread: A Historical Tidbit For Tolkien Fans-Possible Origin of Gollum
Tolkien freely admitted that he drew on a wide variety of sources as inspiration for his epic works. He may have found some small inspiration in this very popular Christian Romance Novel from 1921.

Completest fans (or people looking for a thesis subject) may enjoy the gollum-esge miser in chapter 19 who has a simple gold ring which is "precious" to him. Not to mention a faithful servant and quite familar near drowning dream. Or a character named called Merry (Merriman, however, not Merridoc) in chapter 26

Being that Hill and Tolkien were both Christians, writers, and contemporaries, the idea that he could've picked up one of her best selling books at some point in time and had a couple of things stick isn't that far fetched.

Re: Tolkien fans! Get in here!
I don't do the Tolkien story, I do look for what parts are taken from their ancient folklore. The England folklore was where one of the kings' family married an Elves' bride, the Elves' being the same size as mankind. Long lives the Elves' lived, with magic or something. Pretty sure they were like man because they had children.

Now the ancient folklore of the Germanic people before Christians were heard of was the dragons. They took care of the dragons eggs and the dragons helped them. The male dragons did not fly only the females dragons did, they made the dragons leave when the monks and others told them the dragons were of the devil. Places like Sweden said they were just dumb, of course them believing in trolls were OK it seems, they made deals with the Trolls to get gold from the mountains. In Ireland in ancient times it was the Merman's and Mermen, one of the men of the family or a woman married in the line of Mermen. This being at times they turn back into the fishtail people and go back to the Sea, maybe this was really people coming from the sea with mermaids on their boats? Every country it seems to have little people, these are not Elves. They are the forests' little people, sometimes called brownies. Dwarfs are one of the names of these people from legends. They could disappear and had a temper if you cheated them, they helped people pick crops and do work, the if they lost their temper you might lose everything you had.

Makes one wonder where they came up with these legends or what was going on back then.

I think Tolkien used part of these legends in his books. He also was using the something else which was the power struggle going on back then and now, during his life and now. The more thing change the more they stay the same.
Sorry I got a headache
