Re: What Happens When You REGROW Vegetables From Kitchen Scraps In The Garden?
nothing. it's not decomposed enough to be of help.

the compost pile is an incubator to make the organic matter decompose
into useful chemical molecules.

.
 Quoting: Hal McCoy

Hmmm, nothing ... but .. ummm .. sprouts = future full plants? Pictures of sprouts from the scraps?

I always freeze all of my table scraps for about a week, first. Then thaw them, add a little water and blend the entire mixture. Combine the mixture with the carbon source (I use wood chippings for hamster cages along with a little cedar shavings) and let sit for 24 hours. Then pour into the compost bins ...

wait ... what was the question again?
 Quoting: TheFool

We skip all the above steps and just put the stuff direct into a compost pile in the dirt. I dig a hole in the ground (stick the shovel in the dirt and push the handle about 20 degrees forward) and jam the new stuff in with my foot. As it rots it compacts by itself, so it never really develops into a pile.

Wait a year, and it's good compost.

Am currently doing this in my kitchen window right now, lettuce and celery, just for fun. Lemon seeds are also very easy to grow. I soak them for a week or two in water in the window first. As a child, used to enjoy regrowing carrot tops in the window, they would get so tall. But the carrot itself does not regrow.

I always saw this stuff on pinterest but never actually tried it because for some reason I never really thought it would work. Everyone on here has great tips, I'll have to start some myself!

Re: What Happens When You REGROW Vegetables From Kitchen Scraps In The Garden?
About eight years ago, I had some potatoes go bad and begin to sprout in my cabinet, so I gave them to my son to bury on the edge of the garden. I didn't want them to stink up the garbage can because we were having a warm week outside. Well, to my surprise, several potatoes plants sprung up from that spot, and produced about 5# of pretty tasty taters. What's funny is that we didn't pick all of the potatoes apparently, so some plant sprouted again the following year. This has been going on each year ever since, and we always get our free 5# of spuds without even trying. I do hill up the dirt around the plants as they grow, but that's pretty much all I do.

This is true about the carrot tops. But hang in there...if you plant them they do produce flowers and more importantly seeds you can save aside.

Those seeds will make new carrots!

I love harvesting seeds. I, as well, have asked neighbors if i can take a few seeds if i see them as such. Flowers, yes, but I tell you, lettuce really seeds itself. I am hoping to see more nice plants in the yard this year.

Re: What Happens When You REGROW Vegetables From Kitchen Scraps In The Garden?
I live in central Fl and last year I constructed a garden plot using 8 4' diameter 2' high galvanized steel drainage pipes. At the end of last year we planted collard greens, red cabbage, white cabbage, Brussel sprouts, Carrots, Leeks, Swiss Chard, cauliflower, Red Romaine lettuce, Spinach and Celery. My wife has done some replanting of things in the past, mainly garlic and onions and it has done okay, but not outstanding.

The garden exploded with stuff, we had so much we had to give a bunch away. Our freezer was full of Beef we bought for the ranchers we back up to on our property so didn't have a lot of room to add stuff.

Gardening is fun, but it is a lot of work as well, especially when we have so many other things to take care of.

Crazy thing is where we live there is a chance of frost tomorrow night, if the wind is still. Never before in April have I seen it get as cold as they are saying.

Anyway just my 2 cents.
 Quoting: scimitar

scim,

I remember a few years back, it got cold (or maybe it stayed cold?) for a long time....well into April or even May, I think here in Central FL. I told hubs, "Don't complain, that just means a shorter time of super HOT summer weather."

Well, that wasn't the case at all, cause if I am remembering correctly, it was a very HOT summer once it got here, and maybe quite long, too!
Quoting: Deplorable NO MORE Michele B

Yeah, My wife reminded me of that cold spell and yes It was definitely a very hot Summer.

Re: What Happens When You REGROW Vegetables From Kitchen Scraps In The Garden?
I'm moving to a new apartment that will have a balcony and my apartment faces south.

I have been so wanting to plant a container garden on my little balcony and you have given me ideas.

So it sounds like the garden will have not much effort and you get some good food. This seems too good to be true.

My question is - if you plant something like the bottom of the celery in the dirt or water, or potatos and then they grow, is there any chance they will end up toxic and you cant eat them? or that they would rot if you dont know how to take care of them?
 Quoting: Mary T

the only way they would be toxic is if YOU sprayed something on them.

if you dont have DRAINAGE holes in your pots everything will rot because the roots will drown, literally.

hmmm, I have been turning most of my table scraps into compost with 2 - 48 Gallon Tumbling Composters. And adding my used up coffee grounds to give em some boost.

I should start saving a few to try this...
 Quoting: TheFool

citrus peels do not compost well.
idk why.
i put all kind of food in my compost...even breads.
cotton balls, newspapers, pieces of paper..if it can rot it goes in mine.

the ONLY reason they say not to compost meat is because animals might smell it and dig for it.
otherwise, it rots nicely too.

Re: What Happens When You REGROW Vegetables From Kitchen Scraps In The Garden?
A cool one to try is Chayote. Just put them in a warm sunny place like a window sill and the root will start to grow. When you start to see leaves and the roots are well defined, you just plant at a 45 degree angle in the garden, root side down. This plant will climb, and it gets big, so you might want a trellis to keep it from invading other plants. We have started from store bought chayotes and they did just fine in Vancouver. There are two kinds, the smooth green ones and the darker spiny ones which have a different texture and taste. I love them both.

Expect a knock on your door from the boys from Monsanto. They take this crop infringement very seriously. Just saying, I'd probably only regrow organic veggies.

By the way, for your experiment try putting a few celery and lettuce directly into water (like in a bowl or glass).

I have tried the dirt route, and the really good ones I grew last year were water-started and when they got about 5 inches tall I planted them.

If you try please let me know which ones turned out better for you!

I use scallions to cook with. I dice the greens until they're too short, then put them in a glass of water. In a week I have new stalks to dice. It's a good idea to change the water every day or two.

Hi fellow gardeners, I wanted to share this interesting potato method for growing in chicken wire "cages" with straw and compost.

When the potatoes are ready, you just cut open the cages and push them sideways and the potatoes fall out.

I think I may try this to see how it compares with my usual method:
