Quoting: LaGata I have tried the dirt route, and the really good ones I grew last year were water-started and when they got about 5 inches tall I planted them. If you try please let me know which ones turned out better for you! Do you have to change the water everyday? I’m regrowing lemongrass in water ... https://imgur.com/a/T8ZKxz8 Very nice lemongrass sprouts there, great idea! Never tried those. For the celery and romaine, I would change the water every few days. Sometimes I would go a week. I disturbed them as little as possible, and used room temperature water that was not treated with chemicals (we have well water). It's fun seeing them grow. Now you've got me thinking of starting a bunch in a few days. I have not had any success replanting romaine, but I have had success with potatoes and with collard greens. I just plant the stalk of the collard greens in dirt once I have used all the greens, and some new leaves will grow. I love that what I once viewed as trash can actually grow more food! |

They roll their eyes and laugh at me, call me a insane hoarder/prepped then immediately forget about it. I get the last laugh knowing those fresh veggies were from the garbage they turned their noses up at once. Quoting: Psycho Babble Oh, boy... make them prepare the soil for you... make them work, they will eat it and you are replanting for them. They should be proud of you! I love recycling things. It makes me sad to throw away those scraps knowing that I can regrow them. |

That's onion, garlic, and most anything else that grows from a bulb and stinks. Chives make quite attractive ornamental plants that you can eat. They produce numerous blue flower heads. They also propagate very well from seeds. Oh, my... I saw chives seeds and didn’t get them... would love to have those blue flowers in my kitchen. Thank you for mentioning this... Quoting: Mary T I have been so wanting to plant a container garden on my little balcony and you have given me ideas. So it sounds like the garden will have not much effort and you get some good food. This seems too good to be true. My question is - if you plant something like the bottom of the celery in the dirt or water, or potatos and then they grow, is there any chance they will end up toxic and you cant eat them? or that they would rot if you dont know how to take care of them? I have heard that if potatoes turn green, they are toxic. Supposed to keep them out of the sun. I have much to learn about growing potatoes. I've been married so long, I don't even look both ways when I cross the street. |

I didn't want them to stink up the garbage can because we were having a warm week outside. Well, to my surprise, several potatoes plants sprung up from that spot, and produced about 5# of pretty tasty taters. What's funny is that we didn't pick all of the potatoes apparently, so some plant sprouted again the following year. This has been going on each year ever since, and we always get our free 5# of spuds without even trying. I do hill up the dirt around the plants as they grow, but that's pretty much all I do. Quoting: Bee Girl We had the same thing happen to us with sweet potatoes. We had a couple of them sprout, so we buried them outside in the planter box. This is a big planter box, about 10 feet long, and it was empty when we planted those two sweet potatoes. Now they've filled out the entire planter box. We've grown full pineapple plants from crowns too. It takes about a year and a half, but eventually you end up with the sweetest pineapple you've ever tasted. |

Quoting: Crunch62 I also have a bed with perennial potatoes growing. They don't get very big. Would like to learn more about growing potatoes. Oh, the green onions do great. They are nearly indestructible, practically a weed. And so good! I start those in a little water in my kitchen window after I've cut off the green parts. I don't transplant them until I see a lot of roots and some decent shoots (4-5 inches). I've had green onions growing for 3+ yrs now. They go to seed, and I grow new ones from them! I always put my cut ones in the window, in water, and justclip as needed. These particular ones, I decided to throw in dirt for shits n giggles. Been fun watching their life cycle.
