Re: What Happens When You REGROW Vegetables From Kitchen Scraps In The Garden?
By the way, for your experiment try putting a few celery and lettuce directly into water (like in a bowl or glass).

I have tried the dirt route, and the really good ones I grew last year were water-started and when they got about 5 inches tall I planted them.

If you try please let me know which ones turned out better for you!
 Quoting: LaGata

Do you have to change the water everyday?

I’m regrowing lemongrass in water ...

 Quoting: LittleMe

Very nice lemongrass sprouts there, great idea! Never tried those.

For the celery and romaine, I would change the water every few days. Sometimes I would go a week. I disturbed them as little as possible, and used room temperature water that was not treated with chemicals (we have well water).

It's fun seeing them grow. Now you've got me thinking of starting a bunch in a few days.
 Quoting: LaGata

I have not had any success replanting romaine, but I have had success with potatoes and with collard greens. I just plant the stalk of the collard greens in dirt once I have used all the greens, and some new leaves will grow. I love that what I once viewed as trash can actually grow more food!

Re: What Happens When You REGROW Vegetables From Kitchen Scraps In The Garden?
Every year my kids think I'm the weirdest person on the planet when they watch me replant what to them is garbage. They roll their eyes and laugh at me, call me a insane hoarder/prepped then immediately forget about it. I get the last laugh knowing those fresh veggies were from the garbage they turned their noses up at once.
 Quoting: Psycho Babble

Oh, boy... make them prepare the soil for you... make them work, they will eat it and you are replanting for them. They should be proud of you!

I love recycling things.

It makes me sad to throw away those scraps knowing that I can regrow them.

Onions will survive zone 8 winters undamaged

Most anything of the genus Allium is indestructable south of actual tundra zones. That's onion, garlic, and most anything else that grows from a bulb and stinks. Chives make quite attractive ornamental plants that you can eat. They produce numerous blue flower heads. They also propagate very well from seeds.
 Quoting: Turd Ferguson, Jr.

Oh, my... I saw chives seeds and didn’t get them... would love to have those blue flowers in my kitchen.

Thank you for mentioning this... hf
 Quoting: LittleMe

They can be blue or more of a pinkish lavender. I think it depends on soil acidity or something like that.

ive done several on that list myself so i know it works..

right now i have the bottom section of the celery i stuck in the catnip pot, in my kitchen window which gets direct sun all day.

the cut stalks are wilting away but the center has grown nice green leaves.
i sprinkle water on it every day.

even if it doesnt make more stalks the leaves taste just like celery and i love them in my salads.

Yeah, the kitchen window is the best place to keep them.

i plant all of the garlic cloves which have sprouted, i dont eat them.
they want so badly to grow, so i shove them down in the dirt and they have been growing nicely.
if i can get them to flower and seed then i will be so happy!

I'm moving to a new apartment that will have a balcony and my apartment faces south.

I have been so wanting to plant a container garden on my little balcony and you have given me ideas.

So it sounds like the garden will have not much effort and you get some good food. This seems too good to be true.

My question is - if you plant something like the bottom of the celery in the dirt or water, or potatos and then they grow, is there any chance they will end up toxic and you cant eat them? or that they would rot if you dont know how to take care of them?
 Quoting: Mary T

I have heard that if potatoes turn green, they are toxic. Supposed to keep them out of the sun. I have much to learn about growing potatoes.

Re: What Happens When You REGROW Vegetables From Kitchen Scraps In The Garden?
About eight years ago, I had some potatoes go bad and begin to sprout in my cabinet, so I gave them to my son to bury on the edge of the garden. I didn't want them to stink up the garbage can because we were having a warm week outside. Well, to my surprise, several potatoes plants sprung up from that spot, and produced about 5# of pretty tasty taters. What's funny is that we didn't pick all of the potatoes apparently, so some plant sprouted again the following year. This has been going on each year ever since, and we always get our free 5# of spuds without even trying. I do hill up the dirt around the plants as they grow, but that's pretty much all I do.
 Quoting: Bee Girl

We had the same thing happen to us with sweet potatoes. We had a couple of them sprout, so we buried them outside in the planter box.

This is a big planter box, about 10 feet long, and it was empty when we planted those two sweet potatoes. Now they've filled out the entire planter box.

We've grown full pineapple plants from crowns too. It takes about a year and a half, but eventually you end up with the sweetest pineapple you've ever tasted.

They're fine to eat if the skin turns green. Just peel the green away. The leaves and stems will make you sick if you eat them. You'll vomit before enough alkaloids get in your system to hurt you. Same for tomatoes and eggplant. They're all closely related and belong to the nightshade family.

I am currently growing some 'recycled' green onions in my greenhouse. They are doing well.

I also have a bed with perennial potatoes growing. They don't get very big.

Would like to learn more about growing potatoes.
 Quoting: Crunch62

Oh, the green onions do great. They are nearly indestructible, practically a weed. And so good! I start those in a little water in my kitchen window after I've cut off the green parts. I don't transplant them until I see a lot of roots and some decent shoots (4-5 inches).
 Quoting: LaGata

I've had green onions growing for 3+ yrs now. They go to seed, and I grow new ones from them!

I always put my cut ones in the window, in water, and justclip as needed. These particular ones, I decided to throw in dirt for shits n giggles. Been fun watching their life cycle.

I have been doing this for awhile, I have recycled Bok Choy, Cabbage, Celery, Green Onions and Romaine Lettuce.

The gift that keeps on giving.

Two years ago I left an over-ripe and huge yellow squash in the garden, that rascal sprouted several of its seeds the following year, yummy squash once more.

BTW, I always place the cut-off bottom of the vegetable in a used mayo lid overnight filled with water, then when I get a few minutes the following day I plant it. Works great for me.

Happy gardening everyone.

Very very cool video.

What a great project to do with the kids, both at home and at the church.

This ties directly into the concept from Genesis of plants giving off seeds of their own kind.

Thank you for sharing!
