There were a number of cultures that started the preservation process while they were still alive . One in particular comes to mind in which the end goal was to achieve total oblivion upon passing as the highest state being no state at all ' the ultimate eternal rest .

The body tries to resurrect which is possibly why there have been accounts of people being buried alive, and that is usually after rigamortis and various sure signs of death. Some have come back, possibly due to this.
