Maybe something involving a blond and a Thai.

But food wise, I could go for a pressed Cuban sandwich.

Re: The ultimate sandwich?
Actually, to make my sandwich the ultimate sandwich would require using 17 foot long french bread, sliced horizontally, with all the same ingredients but amounts increased proportionally. Since human intestines are roughly 17 feet long, when you finished this sandwich masterpiece, you'd be completely full and will have reached sandwich Nirvana.

A proper Cuban sandwich has butter on the Cuban bread, inside. They use a sandwich press, which is like a foreman grill without lines. One of the ingredients is a marinated pork utilizing sour orange juice, sour orange trees are a variety of orange used as a grafted root stock, some use grapefruit as a substitute.

Commercially available as "Mojo". The one I tried was not good.

If you are looking for sandwich secrets, the secret ingredient for a Philadelphia Hoagie is onion juice. The kind you buy in a bottle. I think they mix it with Italian dressing.

Recipes are online.
Use a good euro style bread.
When I was a kid, if the bread was even one day old, I swear I was in danger of loosening my teeth.

Re: The ultimate sandwich?
Another contender for ultimate sandwich is an authentic classic reuben.

Ingredients:

- corned beef brisket
- sauerkraut
- swiss cheese
- thousand island dressing
- butter
- soft rye bread

Directions:

(1) Butter each slice of bread and place into skillet buttered side down
(2) Spread 1 tablespoon of thousand island dressing on each slice of bread
(3) Evenly spread Sauerkraut and place a slice of cheese over each slice of bread
(4) Pile the Corned Beef on one side, then press sandwich together
(5) Place skillet over medium-low heat and grill until bread is browned and crisped
(6) Flip sandwich over to grill other side
(7) Slice into two wedges
(8) Insert tooth pick in each wedge to hold together

Serve with 1 dill pickle spear, small dish of cole slaw or potato salad, and glass of unsweetened iced black tea.

POW!

Ruben are good.

Try a sandwich based on cordon blue

Chicken ham(or bacon) and cheese.

That's where I found out about

Ah yes. The holy grail of sandwiches. The Monte Cristo sandwich is ham and cheese baptized in whipped egg a la french toast and then grilled/fried. Without question a mighty contender for ultimate sandwich.

I’m not much of a sandwich eater...maybe once every couple months or so. When I do get around to having one it’s pretty basic...either PB&J (PB has to be Jiff and J has to be blackberry), homemade egg salad or grilled cheese.

I don’t like most store bought bread, and while I make excellent homemade bread I haven’t done so recently. I have a yucky face look right now thinking of store bought bread.

What type of bread do you make at home? Oat? Whole wheat? Multigrain?

Probably if you're particular about your peanut butter (which I presume is Jif creamy), you're also choosy about your jelly or jam. Are you a Smucker's, Knott's or Dickenson's kinda girl? Seedless blackberry jam? Sugarless preserves?

And for your ultimate grilled cheese sandwich, do you prefer a particular type of cheese? Swiss? Mozzarella? Cheddar? American?

I make whole wheat, herb, multigrain and white breads (working with flour is therapeutic). I don’t ever do sourdough. I have it on my mind to make cinnamon raisin bread.

I like Smuckers seedless blackberry jam, and yes, it has to be creamy Jif. I forgot above that there is only one f in Jif. I have been known to make my own jam, but honestly, it doesn’t taste better than Smuckers. Peach preserves goes nicely on dinner rolls, which reminds me of my Grandma who was my best friend.

I like most kinds of cheeses on grilled cheese sandwiches but I don’t do Swiss. My fav would be a three cheese blend...whatever is on hand.

Kraut - gotta be careful here. Go get naturally fermented kraut or it's crap. If it says "vinegar" on ingrediants, it's bullshit.

Swiss - Although traditional for Rueben, nobody really likes swiss cheese and it's too stiff. Go get some other like Muenster or American White, Havarti, etc.

Thousand Island - This can go bad very quickly, tastes like nothing most brands. Make your own or only buy top shelf. There are also orangey sauces now that claim to be sandwich related condiment These will be better than actual salad dressing TI.

Very much agree with these suggestions. We brine our own beef, literally from the neighbor's field. And make our own sauerkraut (literally cabbage and salt in a sterile crock in the basement). The difference is unbelievable. I'm not much on the dressing/sauce but a little bit adds a nice tanginess.

Also rye bread makes a world of difference. Plain whole grain will work in a pinch but then it seems as if something is missing from the sandwich.

Homemade bread is beyond my culinary prowess. Respect! If you can make cinnamon raisin bread as good or better than Sun-Maid or Dave's Killer Bread "Raisin' the Roof", then please tell me where to stand in line to get some.

Seedless blackberry jam is hard to beat. I'd rate boysenberry as a close second and kiwi jam as third. Haven't had peach preserves since childhood. My grandma used to make fried apricot preserves turnovers drizzled in powdered sugar icing.

Three-cheese grilled cheese sandwich IS the ultimate grilled cheese!

Take chopped red onion, pepperoncini & roasted red peppers
and put them in a bowl. Add a few tablespoons of vinegar from the pepperoncini jar and a splash of olive oil and toss it all together. Let that sit in the fridge for a while.

This "relish" makes most boring sandwiches amazing.
