I will just say further because I'm seeing recommendations for melatonin and other stuff that anything that helps you sleep more deeply will affect the way you can remember what you are dreaming.
Maybe you're just paranoid, pudders.

Apologize, can't find you're original statement, but are saying NOT to take Melatonin?
 Quoting: here&back

It's known that short-term use has the least consequences but long-term use will produce dependency as it can affect natural melatonin production. People who should use it are those already affected by low melatonin production.

Otherwise, just learning how to sleep and dream naturally can be superior. Lot's of ways to overcome insomnia with techniques for sleep such as PMR (physical muscle relaxation) or TMM (The Military Method).

Always best to go about it naturally if one can is all... supplement only when everything else fails but that can mean removing things like caffeine or other stimulants before sleep.
 Quoting: YouAreDreaming

Ok, thanks. That's what I do, but if you read about melatonin on the net, they say take it everyday . . .
 Quoting: here&back

It's the internet, there is lots of bad advice. I know 'dream gurus' telling teenagers to take Galantamine to learn to dream. It's bad advice and there is a lot of misinformation that can cause people to do potentially harmful things like hard drugs just to have a trippy dream. Sure they can do it but often these things have consequences and were not nessicary in the first place.

The influence of Carlos Casteneda caused a large group of people to do entheogenic dreaming but if you read his entire works Don Juan told Carlos in the end that he didn't need the drugs, he just chose to use them.

Being part of the dreaming community since the inception of the internet I can only say that those who just train it as a skill over time and let it develop seem to keep at it enjoying a rich dream life.

I prefer the natural approach to life because it's often the most rewarding and safest approach. Dreaming included.

Weed makes dreaming stop. I dream very vivid lucid dreams every night. When I used to smoke weed I would have maybe 1 or 2 week. After I stopped my dreams came back to a daily thing. Each is different but I can say that I am almost certain it takes your dreams away.
 Quoting: Vivarium

If it affects our brain in waking life, ie causes short-term/long-term memory loss that carries over into our dream life because our dreaming is linked to our brain as the brain repurposes itself for our dream experiences using the same regions it uses for our senses, logic, reason etc.

That's why I quit alcohol 11 years ago as it was ruining my dream life diminishing the experience. I'm also 49 so have grown out of a lot of the vices of my youth.

I have tried to see the date on a newspaper in my dreams and for some reason I am never allowed to know what date I am seeing.

Recently I dreamt that I was in a coffee shop that was outwardly shut down but inwardly open. They had made it look like all of the stores in this shopping mall were closed because of the pandemic but they were letting people in the back door. I told the people in the shop I was dreaming and they were all a part of my dream. They looked at me like I was crazy and a guy next to me said I was telling the truth that it wasn't reality and they were all a part of my dream. Weird stuff. In this dream I tried very hard to see the date on a newspaper and someone said "they will never let you see the date". I started running with the paper and people that telephoned in to my dream started chasing me and that was when I ended up in the coffee shop. Never did get to see the date.

I'm talking about from experience. Before you go to sleep keep thinking about lucid dreaming. Think on how you'll soon be in the dream. I visual a school hallway. Keep telling yourself that when the next thing changed that will be the dream.

 Quoting: Vivarium

Many people cannot read in their dreams, and I view this as linked to their dream development because I can read in my dreams, but that also only came by training myself to do so when I was a teenager and notice I could not read in my dreams. It was the same with not being able to smell and taste as well as other cognitive issues causing deficiencies in my dream, or 'noise' that I didn't like.

I started to correct a lot of those issues because I liked functional stable dreams that had a high-quality of realism so I worked on fixing everything that was deficient in my dreams. I found I could train for dreaming while awake by working with reality as a template for my dreaming standards.

For example, I couldn't taste/smell and that disappointed me as a teenager. Why? At 15 I started to have lucid dreams thanks to an article by Dr. Stephan LaBerge called 'Power Trips: Controlling Your Dreams' where I learned about lucid dreaming. I was successful and loved it, started to do it regularly except I was noticing lots of problems in the dream content. For example, I'd be in a restaurant and there would be food. I knew I was dreaming and was eager to see what the food was like if it could be realistic. I go and grab it, it has no smell and no taste making the experience not as exciting for me.

Well, I reasoned I could have vision/hearing/touch so there must be something wrong that taste/smell was not working and by luck alone, at the age of 16 I was drinking a hot chocolate and was wondering why it could be so sensory-rich while awake but not in my dreams, and I paused smelled the hot chocolate and tasted it telling myself that I want to smell and taste it as good or better than this in my dreams and really paid attention to the sensory experience.

Went to bed started to review the hot-chocolate as a sensory-experience as I fell asleep and sure enough, had a dream where I was suddenly drinking hot chocolate and it smell and taste were vivid and as real as the waking counterpart. Woke up thrilled and realized that all I had to do was work with a sensory experience while awake to improve dream quality during sleep thus started the cognitive mapping phase of my dream training and it also worked for reading because the text was all hallucinatory, shifty, and abstract so I used English class to train my mind to map the text of books so I could have stable reading in my dreams just like the hot-chocolate and that worked too.

So perhaps you can read the dates with a bit of training similar to improve cognitive functional dreaming.

I'm all about improving dream fidelity and quality for optimal dream experiences.

Re: Experts in Lucid Dreaming: A Question
Just wanted to toss this out here in case someone is more familiar with this kind of thing:

Last year I had a powerful dream eerily similar to what happened in Lebanon with the Beirut blast - 2 days before it happened.

First dream I've ever had like that, where there was a massive explosion, or one that was so vivid and seemingly significant, even before the event came to pass.

It could just be a strange coincidence, but I don't personally believe it was.

Any thoughts on how something like that might occur?
 Quoting: Teioh

I've heard it explained in Half Past Human that a bomb(or similar large event) sends ripples of energy out in all directions including the past and the future and some people pick up the impressions and start talking about it online. The Half Past Human webcrawler uses an algorithm that track words used in social media and come up with predictions based on the frequency of words used.

Re: Experts in Lucid Dreaming: A Question
We develop neurologically for dreaming, your brain does produce neural pathways and neurons to facilitate the dream experience. If we slack our ability to dream goes into atrophy so we lose perception, memory and awareness as a result.

It's a skill that needs constant stimulation and participation to keep active or it goes the way of the dodo bird. You can get it back, it just takes knowing how to train the brain so it's stimulated out of atrophy just like learning to read, or play the piano.

Here's a training system that addresses active dream development and explains all the science of how we develop neurologically for our dream experiences with ample fMRI research backed by training those deficient regions including awareness.

You were an exceptional learner, or someone with amazing first timers luck, that kicked you into a higher level.

You jumped straight from normal lucid dreaming, to precog and remote viewing judging on your example.

These things are possible, and I suspect the reason you can’t replicate it, is your higher self has shut you down until you learn to use it for things other than criminal/selfish reasons.

The 1st precog dream I changed while in conscious active reality was in 1976, standing with 2 other people. There was a net type field around me. They freaked when I spoke each of their thoughts, before them. I had to stop myself bc they were beginning to feel uncontrollable fear.

I don't like it when people RV me, even if I like them.

If I had to guess it's probably first-timer's luck considering I was never taught or studied this subject before. I'll give a bit more background...

I grew up as a Pentacostal preacher's kid. So trust me when I say I've seen some sh*t. I've seen a lot of fake sh*t too. Only a few inexplicable experiences have happened in my life that convinced me there IS more to this 4 dimensional existence we perceive. This being one of them. I'm a "seeing-is-believing" type person. I have virtually zero faith in things unproven. Once I was able to prove to myself & others that "whatever" this thing I was doing (which based on the conversations I believe we're now talking Remove Viewing?) was real, testable, repeatable, I was all in at that point. I still to this day have never picked up a book on the subject or read more than the first paragraph or two of an article. Okay enough of that.

The main reason I'm responding to (my) yesterday's thread is because I was able to recall my dream from last night. Nothing spectacular to report. Pretty random. I had no real goal other than memorization. But I feel like I took the first step in reclaiming this "gift" by setting my mind to remember & accomplishing that. So yay to me...lol I'll either periodically update this thread or start a new one if the experience warrants it's own thread. Thank you to everyone that contributed & I take everyone's advice/concerns to heart.

You don't want your body going through the constant fight-or-flight response during sleep when there is no threat because it's preparing itself for this action when there is no reason too.

 Quoting: YouAreDreaming

Ok that is creepy.....all my nightmares are the same, just different settings.
All of them start with trying “flight”...then end up having to “fight”.
How did you know???
Actually, don’t answer, I’m freaked out...and sorry OP for hi jacking your thread.
 Quoting: A Deplorable Neanderthal

I know because I have studied dreaming since 1987 and focus on the neurological development and psychological development of the dream experience.

The science of dreaming and dream psychology shows we go through this fight-or-flight response with nightmares and you are simply in that statistical area of your own dream experiences.

The thread asked for an expert so here I am. And yes I can help you resolve nightmares for the remainder of your dream experiences so they go the way of the dodo bird as they should.

Dreaming should be a nighttime adventure and vacation destination, not a psychological torture chamber. I haven't had a nightmare in over 34 years now since I first learned to actually dream properly, but that is because I chose to learn how and participate in my own dream experiences.

Re: Experts in Lucid Dreaming: A Question
So as an engineer with an unsolvable problem, that works itself out the next day or after a sleep. Is it in a subconscious memory location, that comes to conscious thought. With a solution?
 Quoting: uscrusader1

This part of problem solving in dreams actually has been a big focal point for a lot of dream research spanning decades. It's people like Srinivasa Ramanujan who produced some of the most advanced mathematical theorems for his day all thanks to being able to solve them in his dreams which appeared as scrolls with the theorems (he was in isolation and self-taught but blew away the most advanced mathematicians trained in university). Lot's of other inovcations and discoveries emerged from dreams providing those epiphanies. The Periodic Table of Elements, the Sewing Needle, The Benzine Molecule and so on.

[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

Why? The subconscious mind is constantly working on our logical problems with us during the day and quite often we can subconsciously know a solution to the problem but while awake it doesn't quite make it to the surface and then presents itself in the dream. Chances have you already figured it out but needed a break from the problem so the solution could now present itself elegantly in your dream.
