What's the CRAZIEST spooky shit you've seen in the aftermath of a tornado?
Thankfully here in the southeast US we were relatively lucky when yesterday's line of severe storms lost enough energy by time it arrived and twister outbreaks were minimal.

So, growing up as a wee lass, I thought I might grow up to be a meteorologist one day (life had other plans for me, alas) and I was most fascinated w/ all the crazy stories documented about unexplained shit in the wake of killer tornadoes.

And in the GLP spirit, I thought I'd throw some wood on the camp fire and start a discussion w/ folks to see what, if any, unexplained mind blowing thing you've seen.

My experience....seeing where a mini twister came off the big F4 from Thanksgiving Sunday that hit Raleigh, NC (which roared by my farm about 2 miles as the crow flies) and cut a distinct path thru' back of our swamp. Just like a big-ass comb parted the trees - might've been a down burst but it was crazy how there were still dead trees standing on either side and then some live trees where down.

...oh, thoughts go out to all who got hit in this big outbreak across the country!

From a small tornado, I saw a Ford SUV flattened like a pancake, and folded around the top of a tree.

Like an F2? I've seen damage from an F1 that was spotty due to the twister bouncing.

Unfortunately investigative teams from NOAA determined the F4 that hit decades ago out of the blue tore thru' 4 counties, stayed on the ground for over 86 miles.

That big bitch hit, of course, about 1:30am in the middle of the night. (sigh) Seems to happen here in the Carolinas more at night.

One hit my shed

It pulled up the 8” thick support post and tossed it 80 yards into the field

Right next to the post was a water trough filled with soda cans. 99.5% of f the cans remained in the trough.

That qualifies as spooky shit! Go figure how the physics works. Guess that's why the weather science folks have consistently tried to understand to give better, longer warnings to people.

Have heard where an insurance adjuster was shown a house (traditional stick built). One half was just GONE clean off the cement slab foundation. The other half included a dining room, table set for dinner, chairs undisturbed, napkins on top of plates.

This was out in the mid west somewhere back in the late '60s.

Oh damn....that totally sucks. For you seeing that and for the farmer's loss.

Knew a gal down east who's family was small chicken farm operation and she told me they lost a huge number of animals, no carcasses as evidence, just their accounting books showing that tornado swept up chickens and who knows where they ended up dropping out of the skies. No reports of that appeared later.

Oh, have seen this first hand actually....fish flopping around on the ground, pavement is weird. The couple of times I've seen it was always a waterspout that came onshore.

Another childhood experience that tweaked my curiosity into weird weather causing crazy shit.

I take it you're a rancher/farmer out west of me in NC. If so, am hoping rest of spring won't escalate w/ wild-ass weather impacting farm operations.

That's very common, what you described.

A very poignant follow-up story after the F4 smashed Raleigh decades ago was where someone was cleaning up their family's debris up in Nash County (where twister dissipated) and found old checks from a victim in Raleigh. I'm thinking checking acct holder in Raleigh was killed or either parent of lil' boy killed by falling fireplace.

It was known to get hit by tornadoes back in the Indian days. The area of Xenia was called "The Place of Angry Winds" by the Shawnee Tribe who lived in the area.

hf

On a side note, since it's been brought up in the other recent severe weather threads, over my many decades living in the Carolinas, lot of my elders as well as myself now believe the so-called Tornado Alley has grown in size and shifted somewhat.

Am signing off to get some chores done outside but will check back later to see if anyone else contributes to thread.

Even though I've been on the scene of several tornado aftermaths in my day but that was the strangest thing I've ever seen.

I was in a very destructive tornado when I was 3 years old. We were watching TV eating popcorn and the warning came on. Next thing I remember is a telephone pole came through our wall where the TV was. We ran to a center room and my parents put me under the bed. They put my baby brother beside me. I thought he was dead as he was covered with glass from window above his crib. Shook him until he cried, and I was so relieved. Our entire house destroyed only two bedroom walls were standing.

Later my parents told me our neighbor had a stick impaled thru her body, but she went to hospital and survived.

I am what I call a 'forever student of everything' and a couple of yrs ago I was so fortunate to stumble across a particular book where back in 1979 the authors were talking about the theory of how time/space somehow warp or do something weird allowing shit to happen just like what happened to the crew on the USS Eldridge (Philadelphia Experiment), which was man induced whereas what we see after tornado damage is all Mother Nature's doings.

Shit like this just fascinates me!

Oh wow, I'm sure what you experienced was intense as hell! It's bad enough to get smashed by an F5 once but to get hit repeatedly in waves, damn.

Few yrs ago I finally got around to reading F5 by Mark Levine. I have a tremendous amount of respect for folks living out in what's always been thought of traditional Tornado Alley. Here in the Carolinas, we used to just deal w/ hurricanes but now we've add twisters to the list.

Re: What's the CRAZIEST spooky shit you've seen in the aftermath of a tornado?
I was in a very destructive tornado when I was 3 years old. We were watching TV eating popcorn and the warning came on. Next thing I remember is a telephone pole came through our wall where the TV was. We ran to a center room and my parents put me under the bed. They put my baby brother beside me. I thought he was dead as he was covered with glass from window above his crib. Shook him until he cried, and I was so relieved. Our entire house destroyed only two bedroom walls were standing.

Later my parents told me our neighbor had a stick impaled thru her body, but she went to hospital and survived.

Holy crap!! That's one helluva memory at such a young age to have! I gotta' ask, do you have any anxieties when this kind of weather gets near you?

Saw the trailer portion of a big rig pierce through the side of a 3rd or 4th floor section of a mall. The trailer was about 1/2 way through the wall, and whatever else was inside that exterior wall, and 1/2 way out, hanging in the breeze.

And see what amazes me is the height of collision....3 or 4 stories up in the air is really high up. That's crazy!

Over 20 yrs ago out north of Raleigh (NC), an F2 slammed into lil' cow town over from me and someone I knew took an abrupt ride in her cast iron tub. She ended up in her neighbor's yard which is like nearly 1/4 mile from her house. Gained the rep of being the flying Grannie.

Saw a 2x4 pierce an oak tree. I saw pieces of straw pierce a stop sign!

Had a twister travel over a mile, through a housing development, jumped over our house and the house across the street and set back down. Destroyed over 50 houses in our development. And in the aftermath found a cat clinging to the back screen porch of our house. Dont know where he came from but he stayed with us for years after that. That cat wasnt afraid of anything after that.
