If they just sat and didn't respond, it might be to allow humans to cope with their existence. If ships just appeared everywhere and beings walked out right away, it might cause mass hysteria.

So, they first appear... let the inital excitement or hysteria pass.

Some time later, lights start flashing. Let the hysteria pass.

Later on ramps appear. Let the hysteria pass again.

Finally a door opens and they walk out.

Everyone is much calmer, although still alarmed. The idea of other life would accepted by most, maybe not into society, but their existence.

^ Makes sense...because with humans, there's always hysteria. Just look at this past weekend's snowstorm here in the Denver area...panic like no one's ever experienced snow...

I, personally, do not believe that humams are as important in the universe as we like to think. Imo, if ET's exist and have the technology to travel here from far away places - Why would they? To me, the only reason that something so advanced would come here would be to hunt and gather resources. That could be a wide range of things that are in, on, or under the Earth. It could also mean that they come here to harvest us. Idk. But, I DON'T think that ET's would be friendly or would be here to help humanity. Humanity WON'T even help itself! So, I would have to say kill them, if we can.....but only after communication attempts have failed. Kindda like in "Mars Attacks" or "ID4". I know this opinion won't be popular but....Just sayin

Depends on what kind of ETs they are.

Are they human looking and some of our galactic relatives, and friendly?

I think we should be careful about ascribing human motivations to ETs. We're a primitive-thinking species, still hunting and gathering. They are likely to have different goals than we would (at this stage of our development, at least). Those goals are probably as varied as are the number of species out there, which i suspect is infinite. And, their goals could have nothing to do with our physical resources. We may be connected with some of them in deeper, non-physical ways. The possibilities are endless.

We should never jump to conclusions or presume that they are motivated by the same things as we are.

That is actually a good possibility. It doesn't mean, however, that those who made all of this are still in control.
