Travel advice needed ... has anyone planned a Europe trip 10 years in advance? | |

Once they are all grown, we're OUT. We'll be 55 and 57. We're architecting everything so we can sell the house, take off work without too much problem, go to Europe ... and then return to our different, forever home and begin Phase III. The biggest "risk" is that we find some way to never come back from Europe. We're not worried about anything that happens here when we are over there - we have 10 years to prepare. The plan is that at that point, we'll be nomads with a chunk of money and little responsibility. We figure it will take at least 3 months to go to all the places and really enjoy it. Maybe 6. Is that even possible? Are there 6 month tourist visas? We're not looking for luxury. We'd rather stay long and see everything. By that time I hope to have at least a hundred thousand bucks dedicated to leisure ... but I'd like to come in way lower than that. We're good campers. Has anyone ever planed a big European tour years in advance? Before I start with the travel agents, I wanted to see if GLP'ers had any experience. We want to do all of Ireland and the UK, then straight on down through the Netherlands along the Rhine and all of Italy (the North to South leg is an ancestry/geneaological trip, which is why we need time), then into Greece and then Spain, France (all optional - no ancestors in Greece, Spain or Frace) ... and back home. Am I silly for trying to plan this far in advance? Any advice on how to get the longest trip for the fewest dollars and what to do this far in advance?
